I have no issues with the teachers or administrations of Hartford Sumner Elementary, where my two children attend. I do, howver, have issues with the food service program there. The menu is not varied enough, they need more whole grains and fresh produce, there is WAY too much fried foods and foods with empty calories. Looking at the amount spent in the budget, I know that with labor costs included along with food costs, this could be done for about $100,000 less per year while offering a more dietetically sound menu. Food does not have to be boring to be healthy; it seems the food service department has fell into a rut, and is using convenience foods without creativity in the menu, rather than employing passion with a desire to feed these children and feed them well (nutritiously). Perhaps the scores would go up, as well, if children had better food to eat, as there is no guarantee what these children eat at home, and it would be a sure way to make sure the kids are at least getting one dietetically sound meal a day.
