Spring Hill College, Graduate Program in Business Administration History

Spring Hill College/Alabama, founded in 1830, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Catholic Church (Jesuit). The 450-acre campus is located in a suburban area a residential and small business area. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 1446.

The Graduate Program in Business Administration was founded in 1986 and is located on the main campus, in its own building, Yenni Hall. Courses also are offered at Atlanta, Georgia (MBA). The basic educational approach is to prepare students for responsibilities in the middle- and upper-management ranks by teaching and refining conceptual and human relations skills. The program includes a business ethics and social responsibility course in the curriculum.

The MBA Program offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) as well as a joint degree in public accounting (BS/MBA) and a 5-year BA or BS/MBA.

Thirty-six total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 12 elective credits. Required courses include:

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements by transferring up to 9 hours of MBA core or elective course work with a grade of B-or better. Students with an earned master’s degree outside of business will receive credit for a maximum of 2 elective courses (6 hours) and must then complete 6 hours of elective courses with a “BUS” designation of 510 or higher.

Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending part time is 2 years; maximum, 6 years.

There are 3 total full-time graduate business faculty, all of whom hold a doctorate; there is 1 part-time faculty member, who holds a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated below average for Category IIA institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average business class size is 11.

Library

The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 185,868 volumes, 308,748 microform items, and 1397 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to approximately 2200 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in business ethics. Students have access to such databases and networks as Business & Company Resources, Business Index, ASAP Lexis/Nexis, Business Source Premier, Hoover’s Business Online, Mergent Online, SMEALSearch, Value Line, Wall Street Journal, Yahoo Finance, Faulkner Advisory on Information Technology Studies, American FactFinder, Statistical Resources on the Web, ThomasNet, Ulrich’s Periodical Index, USDA ESS System, WorldCat, Oxford Reference Services Online, ProQuest Newspapers, Free Management Library, Going Global, SocIndex, and Washington Post Business Glossary. Other opportunities for research consist of interlibrary loan services.

Computers

Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of 2 computers in the business division, 161 in computer labs, 25 in library open areas, and 6 in residence halls.

Career and Job Placement

Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, and are available through the university placement office.

International Students

International students must take the TOEFL, or the University of Michigan Language Test, or IELTS or Cambridge Examinations (CPE or CAE). International students must score 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health consisting of a TB test, and proof of adequate funds to cover 1 year of study. The application deadline for fall entry is July 1.

Calendar

The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 6 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only.

Spring Hill College, Graduate Program in Business Administration Admissions

A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GMAT score of 400. The formula for using the GPA and GMAT scores is (200 x undergraduate GPA) + GMAT, or minimum 1000. Most important admissions factors are academic accomplishments and ability, GMAT results, and grades in upper-level courses. A strong mathematics background is not required.

7 students enrolled in the 2006-2007 class. Transfers are accepted.

Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, and a nonrefundable application fee of $25. The application deadlines are August 1 for fall entry; November 25, spring; April 1, summer. Students are notified on a rolling basis of the admissions decision. Once accepted, students may defer admission.

Spring Hill College, Graduate Program in Business Administration Financial Aid

About 37% of graduate business school students receive financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships, for a total average of $13,152 annually; maximum $18,500. The FAFSA is required. The application deadlines are August 20 for fall entry; December 20, spring; May 15, summer.

Tuition for in-state residents is $368 per credit. Nonresidents pay $420 per credit. Graduate student housing is not available.
