Philander Smith College is a private, historically black college that is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Philander Smith College was officially founded in 1877 under the name of Walden Seminary as a means of providing educational opportunities for freed slaves west of the Mississippi River. The school was renamed to Philander Smith College in 1882 in order to recognize the financial contributions of Adeline Smith, the widow of Philander Smith.

Philander Smith College is unique in its study options. There’s never a reason to feel alone in your studies either, since there are academic support services like Learning Center, Reduced Course Load, Remedial Instruction and Tutoring. Besides, when any student is looking for some counseling or other types of support, Career Counseling, Employment Service, Freshman Orientation Program, Health Services, Personal Counseling and Veterans Counselor can help. Specifically, the university has a Independent Study, Internships, Liberal Arts/Career Combination, ROTC, Army, Study Abroad and Teacher Certification.
