Founded in 1929 by Richard S. Stephens in San Francisco, the Academy of Art University is the largest private art and design school in America offering state of the art technology, facilities, and tools. The school offers the following degrees:
- Bachelor of Fine Arts

- Associate of Arts
- Master of Fine Arts
- Master of Arts
- Master of Architecture
Art students can attend classes on campus or participate in the online program while working towards an undergraduate, graduate, or continuing education program. The Academy also offers a comprehensive Liberal Arts program, and all degrees have Liberal Arts requirements that need to be completed prior to graduation.
Currently, there are 23 areas of art for students to study about and students, especially those not sure which area to pursue, are encouraged to enroll in various courses in order to discover the right education fit. Fashion, art history, graphic design, and photography are some of the courses students come to the Academy to study.

Students wishing to enroll in the undergraduate program have the option to start with the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters and applications are accepted through the first week of each semester. All applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and submit transcripts.
Graduate students must submit official college transcripts, a portfolio representing a body of work in your chosen field, a statement of intent, and a resume.
All students are encouraged to send in requirements as soon as possible in order to gain a spot within this school.
Financial aid for students is readily accessible at this school. If you are not a need based student, non-need distribution for financial aid is determined by Academics and Art. Financial aid forms are FAFSA and Institution’s own financial aid form. Pre-colllege programs, Spring Forward grants, and Teacher grants are also available for those who qualify.
Student Financial Aid Details
The Academy of Art University offers a broad range of resources for its students. It’s a commuter campus but it also provides housing, so those interested in this program need to apply and will receive a housing assignment. In addition, there are six public exhibition galleries featuring the work of current and former students, where some works can be sold. Fitness classes such as yoga, zumba, and aikido are available along with a pool and gym. Finally, small group tutoring is available in person or online in order to help students make the most of their educational experience.
