Academy of Art University Summary
The Academy of Art University (formerly Academy of Art College), a for-profit career college owned by the Stephens Institute, was founded in San Francisco, California in 1929 by Richard S. With an enrollment of approximately 9,500 students, the Academy is reportedly the largest art and design school in the United States. In 1929, the Academy of Art University was established in San Francisco as the Academy of Art Advertising by Richard S. In 1966, the school became the Academy of Art College, and the school was granted authority by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education to confer the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. By 1977, the Art of Academy College added the Master of Fine Arts program to its degree offerings, culminating the inauguration of the graduate school. The name of the school was changed from Academy of Art College to Academy of Art University in 2004 to reflect the growing scope of art and design disciplines. The Academy of Art University offers both on-campus (traditional instructor-led) and distance education (online) degree and Certificate programs in its fine arts programs. These programs include Associate of Arts (AA, 66 credit hours) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA, 132 credit hours) for undergraduate degrees, Master of Fine Arts (MFA, 63 credit hours) and Master of Architecture (M.Arch, 102 credit hours) for graduate degrees, and 120-credit hour certificate programs for personal enrichment. The Academy of Art University is approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education for the state of California, and its degree programs (except the online Architecture program) are accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) and National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) for degree granting authority. The Academy also owns a series of art studios that were once owned by the non-profit San Francisco Art Institute. The content of the student’s story later came to the attention of the Academy’s administration office, and the Academy expelled the student and referred the student’s graphic short story to the homicide division of the San Francisco Police Department for criminal profiling. Richman lost her job at the Academy after the Academy learned she had earlier that semester required students to read Girl With Curious Hair, a short story by award-winning author David Foster Wallace. Alan Kaufman, another faculty member at the Academy and author of the critically acclaimed Jew Boy and Matches, took up the cause of the student’s expulsion and Richman’s firing by organizing protests against the Academy’s response, which led to Kaufman’s later dismissal from his job because of his role in leading protests about the controversy. In spite of protest letters penned by King and Rushdie concerning both academic and artistic freedom, the Academy proceeded with expelling the freshman student from the school and refusing to offer teaching assignments to both Richman and Kaufman. After the student editor of Starving Artist approached the Academy about covering the protests, the Academy granted permission to the student newspaper to cover the protest in two parts, giving equal weight to both sides of the controversy. During late 1970s-early 1980s, the faculty at the then Academy of Art College formed a union, certified by the National Labor Relations Board as the California Federation of Art Teachers.
