John F. Kennedy University, founded in 1964, is a private, coeducational institution. The 5-acre campus is located in a suburban area 30 miles east of San Francisco. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is approximately 1653. Figures given in the above capsule are approximate.
The School of Management was founded in 1965 and is located on the main campus. The basic educational approach is an emphasis on both personal and professional development through creating a balance between quantitative and qualitative courses, theory and application, and traditional and innovative management practice.
John F Kennedy University, School of Management Academics
The School of Management offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Other programs include internships and cross-registration with the University of California at Hayward and Berkeley and with Contra Costa and Laney colleges. The strongest areas of study are general management and career development. The most popular course is organizational leadership.
Fifty-two total credits are required to complete the MBA. Required courses include:

- Management Communications
- Marketing Management
- Economic Analysis for Decision-Making
- Financial Management
- Project Management
- Business Strategy
Students may eliminate or substitute requirements by transferring credit.
Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments.
There are 2 total full-time graduate business faculty; there are 101 part-time faculty, of whom 10% hold a doctorate. Average business class size is 12.

Library
Publications for the business school contained in the main library consist of more than 5300 volumes and 50 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscriptions to 771 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in organizational development, international business, and career development. Students have access to such databases and networks as Dialog, ABI/INFORM, Proquest Research Library, ERIC, National Newspapers, National Trade Databank, and Moody’s on CD-ROM. Other opportunities for research consist of the Internet.
Computers
Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The business school has its own computer facilities, consisting of 20 PCs with word processing, database, project management, graphics, other software, and Internet access.
Career and Job Placement
Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, but those available to alumni include job listings.
International Students
International students must take the TOEFL. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health consisting of proof of health insurance, and proof of adequate funds to cover 1 year of study.
Calendar
The school operates on a quarter basis. Quarters are 11 weeks long; summer sessions, 11 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the day and evening and weekends.
John F Kennedy University, School of Management Admissions
A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 2.0. Most important admissions factors are a successful interview, essays, and letters of recommendation. A strong mathematics background is not required.
The number of applicants for a recent class was 35; 30 were accepted; 21 enrolled. Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited.
Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, winter, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, 2 transcripts, and a nonrefundable application fee. A preadmission interview may be completed by phone. Students are notified of the admissions decision on a rolling basis. Once accepted, students may defer admission. Admission is held open for 1 year, after which the applicant must reinterview. Check with the school for current application deadlines.
John F Kennedy University, School of Management Financial Aid
The FAFSA and the school’s own financial statement and the previous year’s tax return are required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.
Tuition for all students is approximately $11,000 per year. Books and supplies cost approximately $1000; and other fees, $200, for an estimated annual total of $12,200. Check with the school for current costs. Graduate student housing is not available.
John F Kennedy University, School of Management Students
Thirteen percent of a recent graduate business school class are enrolled full time; 95% have had full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from California (92%). Sixty percent are women, 37% are minorities, and 1% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 39; ages range from 25 to 68. In a recent year, 36 graduate business degrees were awarded.
