Originally focusing on subjects like tourism and modeling, Gulf Coast College has not only expanded its focus, but it has switched to entirely more rigorous areas of study since its founding in the late 1970s. Today, Gulf Coast College is the place for local students looking to get hands-on experience and enter one of the health care professions immediately after graduation.
The two associate degree programs at GCC are in Nursing (AN) and in Medical Assisting. The Nursing curriculum runs for a total of 71 semester hours and will get students ready for the NCLEX. The Associate of Science in Medical Assisting includes an element of general education as well as administrative studies to help students looking to enter work in a hospital or private doctor’s office. Gulf Coast also offers diplomas in Medical Assisting.
The two other courses of study will lead to a Diploma in Practical Nursing or Pharmacy Technician studies. Practical Nursing involves areas of study similar to those in the degree programs, only students will not plan to get a license as an RN. Instead, a state license to work as a Practical Nurse is the goal. Pharmacy Technician Diplomas will get students ready to prepare and distribute medication to patients in a hospital or pharmacy.
Accreditation for Gulf Coast College is provided by the ACICS (Accrediting Commission for Independent Colleges and Schools), that the school may award associate degrees and diplomas in these health care fields.
