Chaminade University of Honolulu, School of Business/MBA Program History
Chaminade University of Honolulu, founded in 1955, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The 60-acre campus is located in an urban area 6 miles east of downtown Honolulu. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is approximately 2300.
The School of Business/MBA Program was founded in 1976 and is located on the main campus, in its own building, Kieffer Hall. Courses also are offered at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base (MBA). The basic educational approach is a mix of both theoretical and case method approaches.

The MBA Program offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Other programs include an internship program and cross-registration with the Master of Arts in Pastoral Leadership (MAPL) program. The strongest areas of study are finance, accounting, taxation, human resources management, and international business. The most popular courses are Human Resource Management, Management Information Systems, and Finance.
Thirty-six total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 12 elective credits. Required courses include:
- Managing Organizational Behavior
- Managerial Accounting
- Quantitative Methods for Business Decisions
- Marketing Management and Strategy
- Managerial Economics
- Financial Management
- Business Ethics
Students may eliminate or substitute requirements with previous undergraduate or graduate course work or by proficiency exams.
The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 1 1/2 years; maximum, 5 years. For students attending part time, the minimum is 3 years; maximum, 5 years.
In a recent year there were 7 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 55% held a doctorate; there were 8 part-time faculty, of whom 58% held a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated above average for Category IIB institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 3; average business class size is 15.

Library
The Sullivan Library houses a collection of more than 70,000 volumes, 135,000 microform items, and 232 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 966 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in company information, investments, accounting, marketing, and management. Students have access to such databases and networks as InfoTrac General Business File and Dialog.
Computers
Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of 50 computer terminals with major software applications.
Career and Job Placement
Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, but those available to alumni include developing and updating resumes, an interview workshop, one-on-one referrals, and networking. Placement is available through the university placement office.
International Students
International students must take the TOEFL. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health consisting of all inoculations and a current TB test, and proof of adequate funds to cover 1 year of study.
Calendar
The school operates on a term basis. Semesters are 10 weeks long; summer sessions, 11 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only.
Chaminade University of Honolulu, School of Business/MBA Program Admissions
A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0. Most important admissions factors are academic accomplishments and ability, work experience, and GMAT results. A strong mathematics background is required.
Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited.
Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, winter, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores and a nonrefundable application fee of $50. The application deadlines are October 9 for fall entry; January 17, winter; April 10, spring; July 10, summer. Students are notified upon receipt of required documents of the admissions decision. Once accepted, students may defer admission for 2 years.
Chaminade University of Honolulu, School of Business/MBA Program Financial Aid
The FAFSA is required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.
Tuition for all students is $365 per credit. Graduate student housing is not available on campus; off-campus rentals are available in Honolulu. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.
Chaminade University of Honolulu, School of Business/MBA Program Students
Seventy percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time; 90% have had an average of 4 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school. The greatest percentage of students are from Hawaii (63%). Fifty percent are women, 15% are minorities, and 20% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 31; ages range from 22 to 53. Ten percent enter directly from undergraduate school; 3% already have a graduate degree. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 39%, business; 20%, liberal arts; 15%, social sciences; 9%, economics; 9%, engineering; and 2%, math and science. About 2% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons; 98% remain to receive their degree.
