I've been attending Kaplan University for about 2 1/2 years now and am just about to graduate. I love the school and have had no major problems. The minor problems I have encountered with Kaplan are really typical of any University and certainly not worse than the traditional community or medical college that I had previously attended up north. My academic advisor has called me at least twice a term to follow up and my academic advisors have been great. The Financial Aide department has been prompt and has assured that I have received every bit of financial aide due to me. When you call for help, you do have to be persistent with them, and I don't mean calling and leaving a simple message and sitting back to wait for the return call. If you don't get through or don't hear back you need to follow up. I have never called the school in 2/12 years and received no response, so honestly I am not sure how people could go months upon months with no response unless the individual just sat back and didn’t follow up. In regards to tuition, when you apply to the school you sign a payment arrangement with them and from what I recall, you are actually asked to fill in what you can afford each month in the event the loans you receive don't cover your entire tuition. I placed in $100 a month and actually have had to pay this amount once because my subsidized & unsubsidized loans in addition to my Citiassist loans covered it all. Mind you I have received no pell grants or anything, apparently I make to much, so I will owe the entire balance in student loans once I graduate. TUITION & BALANCES: When tuition goes up at Kaplan, you are notified by email prior to the term and it has not gone up more than $40 a credit hour since I have been there in 2 1/2 yrs. In addition to the emails you receive a statement via email reminding you to check your student account and you have access to your student account in the student interface where you login to your classes which shows you your balance and what is owed. So if you go 3 months before graduation not knowing what balance is on your account or what the tuition is, then you’ve ignored your reminder emails and the tuition notification emails. WITHDRAWAL & REFUND POLICY: This policy is located on page 19& 27 of your student catalog. You are required to speak with the Bursar’s Office and Financial Aide when it comes to withdrawing from the university. PROMISSORY NOTE is also referred to as a note payable in accounting, is a contract where one party (the maker or issuer) makes an unconditional promise in writing to pay a sum of money to the other (the payee), either at a fixed or determinable future time or on demand of the payee, under specific terms. Why would anyone think that a document securing your student loan for thousands of dollars is an optional document? Do you not sign a contract when you buy a house or a car? This is a required document to SECURE your student loan, it isn’t optional. COST OF LIVING LOANS: are not FASA or government backed loans they are private loans and based on your credit history that you must apply for individually. If you receive a student subsidized or unsubsidized loans from Citibank, they are for tuition and fees and they don’t cover the whole tuition costs at Kaplan. My entire experience at Kaplan has been wonderful. My sister is also attending the university with no problems and loves it. I find considering that you are going to classes in the luxury of your own home and not traveling, that the tuition at Kaplan is fair and certainly better than the hours of travel, costs of gas and wear and tear on my car. Besides, I have compared Kaplan’s tuition with other private schools and they are comparable. You cannot compare private schools tuition with the tuition of a state school. State schools are funded by the government so; obviously their tuition can be much lower when compared to a private school that relies on tuition from their students to keep the doors open. So if you want lower tuition then attend a state school and not a private one. In addition, private schools are not required to accept federal financial aide nor do they have to accept a certain amount of it. If you attend a state school with lower tuition, your tuition will be covered, yet if you attend a private school like Kaplan where the tuition is higher, you will need to come out of pocket for the remaining tuition balance or find a supplemental loan like I did through Citiassist, which is easy to qualify for. Finally, No pun intended. But…Word of advice: Forget about a class action lawsuit. Kaplan University is owned by The Washington Post Company. They earned revenues exceeding 2 billion dollars and have increased millions in 2008 already. A goliath company and I am most certain that a simple class action lawsuit for failure to follow school policies and following through is not going to shake this corporation one bit. Had there been a case, an attorney would have jumped on it already and I certainly don’t foresee any attorney wanting to risk a loss on this company. They have had 1 class action lawsuit against Kaplan, an allegation of antitrust violation and the findings were no wrongdoing. So you’re wasting your time when you could be doing other constructive things with your time to resolve your issues with Kaplan.

First, allow me to say that the gentleman that says he is a Criminal Justice Major, Ken Streetman, is a former Admissions Advisor for Kaplan University. I know this because I too worked for Kaplan. Most of you are right about the environment at Kaplan. You are merely an enrollment to many advisors, and not a human being. There is very little empathy and it comes from upper management. The desire to bring in enrollments and increase revenue is overwhelming at times. I say to you students, this is a great product, but the problems with the system, unfortunately don't make it worth the hassle. By the way, tuition is going up again by 5%. Second time in less than 10 months. check the record!

I am a graduate of Kaplan University (2007) and had so many problems that there is not enough room here to delve into each one specifically. The two major issues I had were in regard to advisors and financials. I had no less than 5 advisors during my 3 years with Kaplan - they would promote, leave, or transfer and each time it would take months for the new advisor to catch up with the new set of students they had acquired (at which time they would then leave as well and the process started over again). I was enrolled in the accelerated BS program and needed very little, if any, assistance - but when I did I did not want to make numerous phone calls or send a dozen emails in an attempt to get a response. I paid cash for tuition and 3 months prior to graduation received a letter in the mail advising me that I owed Kaplan $10,000.00 in past tuition dues -- that I would not only NOT graduate in 3 months time, but would not be allowed to complete my final course if I did not pay the back dues (along with the current monthly dues)! After numerous phone calls I finally found out that the school had raised their tuition 7 months prior and had failed to advise me of the increase .... and had failed to mention the fact that my monthly payments during that time were short. When graduation time neared they finally spoke up -- of course attempting to come up with $12,000 on the spot (past and present dues) was a BIT difficult. I was able to pay the tuition dues, but was very disappointed with the school - their failure to communicate suddenly and inconveniently became my problem and they were not willing to budge an inch ... pay or no degree as it is your responsibility to know what the current tuition dues are at all times. Those were the major issues I faced with Kaplan, but there were other problems as well which is why I chose to pursue my Masters degree at another institution. I also do not recommend Kaplan to anyone I know who is seeking a degree. -Tracy

I DESPISE Kaplan! I have gotten the same runaround that many of you have gotten. I withdrew after 3 weeks of my first class because it was such a miserable experience. I am so angry and bitter over this experience that I could spit! They are dunning me now for my balance (I was a cash pay student). I tried to respond to an email from them at studentaccounts@kaplan.edu but I got a response saying it couldn't be delivered because it "failed permanently". These people are total scam artists! I am now enrolled in the University of Phoenix and enjoying it. It is the antithesis of Kaplan.

Withdrawl is a word they avoid!!! They did the same thing to me. My academic advisor tried to give me the run around and leave me registered for a semester that she registered me for... I assumed I was withdrawn before the deadline and it turns out I wasn't... Now I am going back and forth with students accounts as they want me to pay for her negligence to drop me. NO WAY... Who can we go to?

I am a real person, but I don't want Kaplan University seeing that I posted this information. I attend Kaplan and graduated in February 2008 with a Bachelor Degree in Information Services. 6 weeks from graduation, I received a letter saying that I owed them $12,000. SAY WHAT? I called and called. Got people in Student Accounts who didn't care as to why I owed the money but that I better pay the money. Contacted Financial Aid since I had student loans and was told I was covered, but to no avail. Finally, I sent a letter to the Vice President of Financial Aid and the CEO of Kaplan University. My amount was cut in 1/2, it was explained that my student loan was raturned due to an error on their staffs part back in 2007, and now I have a bill to pay. Well, they won't release my degree until I pay my $6,800 bill. I am terribly disappointed due to the fact that I have been with them for 5 years and highly recommended them. I will not be returning for my Masters and no longer recommend them. Forget the lawsuit. Go to the CEO of Kaplan and go to the MEDIA.

Although I have enjoyed my educational experience at Kaplan University I recently had to take a break due to a medical issue. I contacted my advisor Shushma and left a message letting her know that I would need a break. She convinced me to get back online and discuss this with my instructor. What I did not know is that by doing so I would be charged for the class. I contacted Shushma again and let her know that I would need to take a leave of absence and she said I would need to speak with a financial aid rep first. After leaving numerous voice messages for the Financial Aid rep with no response I could no longer spend all day chasing them down. I finally received an email requiring me to take a financial aid exit exam. So I went online and the site was not secure and I was instructed not to enter any personal information and not to continue on the site. I again called the FA department and left a message to let them know that I could not access this website. Again, no return call. I was contacted by Kaplan a few months later stating that I would need to start up my classes or they would need to drop me from the school. Oh I was also told the first time I called that I could not take a break for any reason and that I would be dropped at that time. Now all of a sudden I haven't been dropped and I need to enroll in the next term to stop from a drop status. When I inquired about returning to school they told me I would have to settle my account with them which was $800.00. Where did this come from? When I inquired about the charges I was told that because my student advisor requested that I contact my teacher they used that as the last day of attendance and I was then over my 7 day grace period. At this point I have left several emails and voice messages for Clodzie a student accounts team leader and have received no call backs. In addition I was told that they had no phone number for the Dean of the Business school but would I like to leave a message for a manager. I left a voice message for Anne Marie explaining in detail my frustration with Kaplan University and the lack of return calls and poor instructions from my student advisor which apparently has cost me money. I have yet to receive a return call from her. My next step is to contact the higher learning commission - the organization that provides Kaplan with their accredidation and make a formal complaint. I would suggest that anyone else that has this issue contact the higher learning commission at 800-621-7440. I am really concerned that I am taking business and ethics courses from a college that acts so unethically. I am so frustrated at this point but I am still not clear what my options are. I understand that they are a for-profit organization but I would think that this would be even more reason for them to take student issues seriously and respond in a timely manner. I was also told that I could file a grievance with their grievance committe but I can't even get this information. I have worked for a for-profit college in the past and at times I do understand that students have complaints and some of them are unrealistic. All I want is a return phone call so I can handle this issue and I can't even get that. I consider this incredibly disrespectful and inconsiderate. As I stated before I really did enjoy my education and have no complaints about that aspect. I would caution anyone who is considering Kaplan to investigate further their business practices.

I am withdrawing from Kaplan Immediately, as they buble and have sent me 3 different student award letters. Every time I called the financial aid department, they transfered me, just to have the phone ring and ring. And when I tried to get an explanation as to why they are charging me $200 and something a month, when I have 3 loans taken out, the 3rd one the school took out in my name without ever once telling me, mind you, and if a pell grant and 3 loans doest cover the $10,425 tuition fee for just 6 months, which it does, (I added up all the figures) and they still expect me to say that much a month they are crazy. So I called my student advisor today, who also had to fix numerous problems the financial aid department caused, and told her of the situation and she said she is skipping her chain of command and taking this issue straight to her director. She said that people in the financial aid department like the ones I've been dealing with give them all bad names and that it is totally unacceptable. I told them I just want to be withdrawn immediately and if not, I will take legal action. They are a scam, they just want more and more money, while the classes are so easy, it doesn't even seem like it's college.

I have been a Kaplan Student for 3 years. I am studying criminal justice and have never had a single issue with the university. I am called often by my admissions advisor and have not even needed to call the financial aid department for anything while going to school. I turn in my documents early though, and follow up with the departments when they call me. I love the school and will happily graduate this year with my Bachelors degree!

I have had the same problems with Kaplan. I cancelled the disbursement to the school becuase of the bumbling they have done processing my withdrawl.I called at the end of the April 8 2008 term and spoke with academic advising. I was given an appointment with Breanna Reader my advisor for the next day at 10 am est. The appointment was not kept. I received a message on m y home answering machine 1 week later asking me to contact her. I could not get in touch with her. I finally recieved a call on April 21 and we went over why I was withdrawing. I was then informed that I needed to speak to the senior advisor about the withdraw and an appointment was set up for the next day at 10:30 am. again it was not kept. I received an email from the senior advisor about setting up another appointment to go over the questions I had already answered. I am planning on attending another university and had the academics manager form that schol on the line with me and we tried to go over the senoir advisors head to her manager. We reached the manager and she informed us we had to go through the senior advisor first , even though the manager actually handles the withdraw. I emailed the senior advisor and put into wrting why I was withdrawing, I received a response stating that the information was passed along to the manager and would be processed in 24 hours. I waited 2 days and received no response. The registrars office informed me I am still active as they submitted the withdraw to be effective at the end of the June term. This affects my financial aid and my ability to start at the new University in May. Being concerned that they have receive monies from my lending institution I called them and cancelled the disbursement, to ensure they did not get or keep the money. I have a sneaky suspicion that I will be getting billed for a term I have not attended and was locked out of on the 8th of April. This school gives you the run around. I am waiting now to see what they will pull next. We should all get together and file a class action suit to prevent this from happening to others, and so that those that have been ripped off can recoup the money they have lost.

I have been enrolled at Kaplan University as a cash pay student. I have no scholarships and no financial aid. I make cash payments and they record them. Yet the accounting department has created two accounts for me that doubled my tuition cost by almost $30,000. I have contacted the financial office many times to have this issue resolved. According to the financial office assistants I owe no money but I keep receiving bills. Also my online balance reflects a staggering amount with payments due yet according to the finance office I owe nothing. Since my situation seems simple enough but the financial office still manages to make mistakes with my account I decided that I was not getting my money's worth so I decided to drop out of school. I called to let an academic advisor know that I wish to withdraw. He informed me that I need to talk to my own academic advisor, S. C., who I was never able to get a hold of for unknown reasons. I set up an appointment to talk to Ms. C. on Friday after 6:00 pm Central Time. I spent the whole evening waiting for the phone call and no one has gotten back to me. Ms. C. called me next week around Wednesday with no apologies or explanations as to why my appointment was not kept. She also sent me an email letting me know who I have to contact in order to withdraw from this school. I have followed her directions precisely and let her know that all the steps were completed. She then informed me that I had to do an exit interview with a senior advisor and set up an appointment on Monday at 6:00 pm Central Time. This appointment was never kept. I contacted Ms. C. again and informed her that I was getting very frustrated and she did apologize and promised to get back to me. That was the last time I spoke with her. I called again last week and was informed that Ms. C. was not available to take the call but I should make an appointment with her. I made a third appointment on Friday at 3:00 pm and informed the person setting up the appointment that I would be at work. I gave specific instructions that I needed to be contacted at my job and left a phone number. Ms. C. called me at home and left a message even though I made sure to leave my work number. She also had my cell that she could call and would have been able to reach me. I have sent her an email that I was very frustrated and disappointed with the way I am being treated. Thought this ordeal I kept informing Ms. C. that I planned to finish the current term since I paid almost $2000.00 for it. I have copies of all the emails including the one informing her in writing that I planned to finish this term. I have not heard from Ms. C. so I called the academic advisor and spoke with another person letting her know of the trouble so far. She has been very helpful and I informed her that I planned to finish this term since I already paid for it and was half way through earning 100% in class so far. Today I tried to log into my class since I have an assignment due this week to work on it but found out that my account has been blocked. I called academic advising and talked to a lady who informed me that I was dropped from the class and that I need to contact my academic advisor, Ms. C., to be reinstated, who is not here on the weekends. So I have been charged almost $2000.00 for a class that I was forced out of for no reason but someone's incompetence and now I cannot get a hold of anyone who could help me access my class. No one is willing to help me and I cannot get a hold of Ms. C. either. I am told that I need to set up an appointment with her but according to my previous experience she is not likely to keep this appointment. I have copies of all the email correspondences.

I graduated from Kaplan. They messed up my ledger card and tried to charge me twice for several classes. My cost of living loan was delayed 8 months because they said my SSN wasn't on the application. I faxed it several times showing IT DID NOT EVEN ASK FOR AN SSN. I called the financial aid office once and asked for my "officer" who I heard tell the person who answered to tell me she wasn't in and "I don't feel like dealing with this issue today." I complained to various people, yet nothing improved. However, the classes are good and I learned quite a bit.

I am a current Kaplan University student, enrolled in the RN-BSN program. I had one advisor, and she got promoted. The admissions advisor, who was so gung-ho about me prior to admission, doesn't even know who I am now. I am in a horrible statistics class, and no one will listen to me. No complaints are dealt with. They don't want me to withdraw. I am applying for admission to Walden University, because I am so very unhappy with Kaplan.

Watch out for Kaplan! They are "money suckers!" They state that they will help place students for employment at the end of their program- well, it depends on the program you enter. They have no idea what is going on for the Medical Transcription Program at Kaplan, Davenport, Iowa! Job Fairs are great when they have people offering jobs for a position you are schooling or nonetheless, any plain job that a person could apply for from a newspaper!KAPLAN, GET WITH ALL OF THE PROGRAMS YOU HAVE TO OFFER!!

Kaplan doesn't want to send me my diaploma!!! I have paid my student account to 0, completed all my required classes, nobody will answer the phone or return my calls. I graduated last year, 2006, and paid my account off over 4 months ago, yet no one will tell me when I can expect my diaploma. This school was a hugh waste of money and time. DONT ATTEND KAPLAN!!!

I am on medical leave from my studies at Kaplan University. I have been enrolled since 2004. If you need living expense loan to complete your education-BE CAREFUL with Kaplan! I don't know what they are doing with my money-but it is not coming to me. I have been working with MANY individuals at Kaplan since DECEMBER 2006 as to WHERE my living expense loan distributions are. I am being charged interest by Citibank-who distributed the funds to Kaplan ON TIME-however, Kaplan has YET to send me the funds for the terms I attended. I have had this issue on other occassions. DO NOT CHOOSE KAPLAN if you need to apply for any type of Financial Aid!

I am having the same problem. I have been bounced from person to person trying to drop this class and I have gotten no results. I was even sent to the student complaints department and got no response from them either.

I am an online student with Kaplan University. I have been happily enrolled with them for 2 years now, since November of 2005. I have not had any problems. The financial aid is all handled very professionally and I am always able to get someone on the phone. I love this school!

I am a former Kaplan University student. When I first signed up I had an advisor who the was fired for not meeting his quota or something related. I the was assigned to someone else. At that time I unable to attend my class. I then called my adviser to drop the class prior to the the start date. I had left messages which were unanswered until one or two weeks after class started. He then persuaded me in to completing one more week to see if I still wanted to drop it. I then called him back and didn't hear from him after a month to late. Now I have a bill that is in collections for the amount of $3300.00 plus. Why do I have this bill when I had Financial aid and Citibank student loans? What is going on! I call the university no one answers the phone after several rings then your call gets transfers from Chicago to California and your question is still unanswered. I would like someone to take care of this matter promptly. This financial injustice is affecting my academic career.
