    Maharishi University of Management, founded in 1971, is a private, coeducational institution. The 262-acre campus is located in a small town in southeast Iowa. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is approximately 901.

    The School of Business and Public Administration was founded in 1981 and is located on the main campus. Under the MBA by Distance Education Program, courses also are offered at 4 affiliated universities in India: Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Bangalore. The basic educational approach is designed to provide the student with formal competence in all the functional areas of business while developing the student’s creativity and capacities for organization and teamwork. Development of the inner self is fostered by the practice of Transcendental Meditation.

    The School of Business offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) as well as a doctoral program in management. Other programs include work-study, university internships, and consulting projects through the Small Business Institute. The strongest areas of study are organizational behavior, organizational development, and human resource development. The most popular courses are Accounting, Total Quality Management, and Strategic Management. Regular programs bring distinguished speakers and visiting professors to campus. The Center for Management Research sponsors management seminars with guest lecturers.

    Eighty total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 24 elective credits. Required courses include:

    Students may eliminate or substitute requirements by taking waiver examinations or by previous course work.

    Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 1 year; maximum, 5 years. For students attending part time, the minimum is 3 years; maximum, 7 years.

    There are 18 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 62% hold a doctorate; there are 10 part-time faculty, of whom 50% hold a doctorate. Average number of credit hours faculty teach is 20; average business class size is 15.

    Library

    The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 139,000 volumes and 7600 special business collections, and subscribes to 1400 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in management and human resource development. Other opportunities for research consist of the Center for Management Research.

    Computers

    Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The business school has its own computer facilities, consisting of the Business Computer Lab with 10 PCs; software includes Microsoft Office, Minitab, and M.Y.O.B.

    Career and Job Placement

    Placement services are extensive and are available through the university placement office.

    International Students

    International students must take the TOEFL. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover the first year of study. There are special fees of $396 per year to cover health insurance. Financial aid is available for these students and consists of institutional aid, scholarships, and work-study programs. The application deadline for fall entry is open.

    Calendar

    The school operates on a block basis, with five 4-week blocks per semester. Graduate programs are offered during the day and evening and weekends.

    A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0. Most important admissions factors are grades in upper-level courses, GMAT results, and work experience. A strong mathematics background is not required.

    Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited.

    Students may begin the MBA program in the fall and spring. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GRE or GMAT scores, 2 letters of recommendation. A personal interview and a campus visit are suggested. Check with the school for the current application fee. The application deadline is open for fall entry. Students are notified of the admissions decision within 6 weeks after the application is received. Once accepted, students may defer admission. Students may postpone entry until the next semester on a case-by-case basis.

    The FAFSA, the school’s own financial statement, and the previous year’s tax return are required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.

    Tuition for all students is $24,000 per year. On-campus room and board costs approximately $6000 an other fees, $430. Graduate student housing consists of on- and off-campus facilities.

    All of a recent graduate business school class were enrolled full time; 60% had an average of 3 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students were from foreign countries (75%). Forty-one percent were women, 23% were minorities, and 75% were foreign nationals. The average age at entrance wass 27; ages ranged from 22 to 39. Thirty percent entered directly from undergraduate school; 20% already have a graduate degree. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 40%, business; 15%, engineering; 15%, liberal arts; 10%, economics; 10%, math and science; and 10%, social sciences. About 5% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons; 85% remain to receive their degree.
