College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Division of Graduate Studies History
College of Notre Dame of Maryland, founded in 1873, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The 58-acre campus is located in a suburban area in the northern suburbs of Baltimore. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is approximately 3000. Enrollment figures in the above capsule are approximate.
The Division of Graduate Studies was founded in 1984 and is located on the main campus. The basic educational approach is multidisciplinary and focuses on general management, primarily using the case method. The curriculum is not exclusively human resources oriented.
College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Division of Graduate Studies Academics
The Division of Graduate Studies offers the Master of Arts (MA) in Management and the MA in nonprofit management. Other programs include joint research projects with faculty members. The strongest areas of study are human resources and health care administration.
Thirty-nine total credits are required to complete the MA in Management. Required courses for the MA in Management include:

- Financial Analysis I and II
- Ethical Issues in Management
- Critical Analysis and Management
- Managerial Writing
- Proseminar (2 credits)
- Economic Theory in Management
- Organizational Assessment
- Computer Information Systems (2 credits)

- Leadership Seminar
Students may eliminate or substitute requirements through advanced standing.
Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending part time is 2 years; maximum, 7 years.
There are 12 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 85% hold a doctorate; there are 15 part-time faculty, of whom 60% hold a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated average for Category IIB institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of credit hours faculty teach is 12; average business class size is 18.

Library
The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 273,000 volumes, and subscribes to 2000 periodicals. Students have access to databases and networks in the fields of business and allied subject areas.
Computers
Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of 20 terminals with access to a DEC MicroVAX II and 2 VAX 3600s. Students may access the computer and PCs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Word processing equipment is also available. The college offers technical consulting services and noncredit seminars to computer users. The College Computer Center has Internet and CD-ROM access.
Career and Job Placement
Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, and are available through the college placement office.
International Students
International students must take the TOEFL. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds.
Calendar
The school operates on a modified semester (4-1-4) basis. Semesters are 14 weeks long; summer sessions, 8 weeks. The program can be completed on weekends only.
College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Division of Graduate Studies Admissions
A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 2.75. Most important admissions factors are essays, a successful interview, and quality of undergraduate school. A strong mathematics background is not required.
Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited.
Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, Watson-Glaser test score, a nonrefundable application fee of $40, 2 letters of recommendation, an essay, and a grammar test. A personal interview is requested. Applicants usually can take the writing tests at this time.Check with the school for current application deadlines. Once accepted, students may defer admission for 1 semester.
College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Division of Graduate Studies Financial Aid
The GAPSFAS or FAFSA is required. Tuition may be paid in installments.
Tuition for all students is $398 per credit. Graduate student housing is not available on campus. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.
College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Division of Graduate Studies Students
Three percent of a recent graduate business school class were enrolled full time; 98% have had full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from Maryland (95%). The average age at entrance is 39; ages range from 22 to 60. Ten percent already have a graduate degree.
