Hood College, Graduate School/MBA Program History

Hood College, founded in 1893, is a private, primarily women’s institution. The 50-acre campus is located in an urban area 45 miles north of Washington, D.C. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is approximately 2121.

The Graduate School/MBA Program was founded in 1980 and is located on the main campus. The basic educational approach is a mixture of the theoretical and case methods, although capstone courses are predominantly case method.

Hood College, Graduate School/MBA Program Academics

The MBA program offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Other programs include interdisciplinary programs in the humanities and information technology management. The most popular courses are management and accounting. Regular programs bring distinguished speakers and visiting professors to campus through an Executive-in-Residence program. CEOs are also invited to spend a day on campus.

Thirty-six total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 6 elective credits. Required courses include:

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements through undergraduate course work.

Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The maximum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full or part time is 7 years.

There are 5 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 80% hold a doctorate; there is 1 part-time faculty member. Faculty salaries are rated below average for Category IIA institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 6; average business class size is 20.

Library

The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 200,000 volumes, 696,560 microform items, and 3290 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 6300 periodicals. Students have access to such databases and networks as Dialog, ABI/INFORM, and CD-ROMs.

Computers

Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of 148 computers and terminals (IBM and Mac). Software includes Windows NT and XP, Microsoft Office 2000, SPSS, and Corel Draw. E-mail software and Netscape Navigator’s web browser are also available, as are word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheets. Computer facilities at numerous locations are open to students from 8:30 a.m. to midnight.

Career and Job Placement

Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, and are available through the college placement office.

International Students

International students must take the TOEFL. International students must score 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT). They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover 3 years of study. The application deadline for fall entry is open.

Calendar

The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 16 weeks long. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only.

Hood College, Graduate School/MBA Program Admissions

A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 2.5. A strong mathematics background is not required.

Transfers are accepted.

Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, 2 transcripts, and a nonrefundable application fee of $35. The application deadline is open for fall entry. Students are notified of the admissions decision 4 weeks after the admissions packet is complete. The latest acceptable test date for fall entry is August 1. Once accepted, students may defer admission.The application is kept on file for 3 years, during which the student may matriculate at any time.

Hood College, Graduate School/MBA Program Financial Aid

The FAFSA, the school’s own financial statement, the previous year’s tax return, and financial aid transcripts from previous schools are required. For an assistantship, the student’s undergraduate records must be available prior to acceptance. Check with the school for current application deadlines.

Tuition for all students is $350 per credit. Graduate student housing is not available on campus. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.

Hood College, Graduate School/MBA Program Students

Six percent of a recent graduate business school class were enrolled full time; all had an average of 8 to 10 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from Maryland (93%). Fifty-three percent are women, 13% are minorities, and 1% are foreign nationals. Ages range from 23 to 42. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 28%, liberal arts; 24%, social sciences; 20%, business; and 19%, math and science.
