Maine Maritime Academy, founded in 1941, is a public, coeducational institution. The 50-acre campus is located in a small town 35 miles south of Bangor. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 746.

The Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics was founded in 1984 and is located on the main campus, in its own building, Pilot House. The basic educational approach is to provide significant experience-based education, using primarily the case method approach, for those with potential for senior management positions in transportation-related organizations.

The Department of Graduate Studies offers the Master of Science in International Business (MSIB), Master of Science in Maritime Management (MSMM), and Master of Science in Global Supply Chain Management (MSGSM). Other programs include internships, work-study programs, and joint research with graduate faculty. Students may choose cooperative employment in maritime organizations. The strongest area of study is global supply chain (logistics). The most popular course is in logistics. Regular programs bring distinguished speakers and visiting professors to campus, including global and national leaders in transportation management.

Thirty-three total credits are required to complete the All masters programs, including 9 elective credits. Required courses for all masters programs include:

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements by having up to 6 credits transferred from an appropriate graduate management college.

The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time or part time is 1 academic year; maximum, 3 calendar years.

There are 5 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 40% hold a doctorate; there are 2 part-time faculty, all of whom hold a doctorate. Average number of courses faculty teach is 3; average business class size is 18.

Library

The Nutting Memorial Library houses a collection of more than 83,118 volumes and 674 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 468 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in marine transportation and logistics. Students have access to such databases and networks as FirstSearch, Dialog, and Hoover’s. Other opportunities for research consist of ongoing research with faculty.

Computers

Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of PCs in the library and dormitory computer centers. Most students have their own computers.

Career and Job Placement

In spring 2006, 37 companies recruited on campus. Fifty percent were national corporations. Majors most in demand were global supply chain management and maritime management. Average starting salary of the graduating class was $46,000; range was $40,000 to $65,000. The percentage of graduates finding jobs were:

• regional corporations 30%

Placement services are extensive and are available throughout their working life. Placement is available through the university placement office. All of the most recent graduating class found jobs within three months of receiving their degree.

International Students

International students must take the TOEFL. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health consisting of certain required immunizations, and proof of adequate funds to cover the duration of study. Financial aid is available for these students and consists of very limited amounts from private sources and international organizations. The application deadline for fall entry is June 1.

Calendar

The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 5 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the day and evening.

Most important admissions factors are management potential, letters of recommendation, and GMATor GRE results. A strong mathematics background is not required.

The number of applicants for the 2006-2007 class was 43; 30 were accepted; 21 enrolled. Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited.

Students may begin the MBA program in the fall only. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, or GRE, a nonrefundable application fee of $40, 2 letters of recommendation, and personal statement of intent. The application deadline is June 1 for fall entry. Students are notified on a rolling basis of the admissions decision. Once accepted, students may defer admission for up to 1 year.

About 28% of graduate business school students receive financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships, for a total average of $8500 annually; maximum $18,500. The FAFSA and the school’s own financial statement are required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.

Tuition for in-state residents is $320 per credit, or $10,560 per year. Nonresidents pay $585 per credit, or $19,305 per year. On-campus room and board costs approximately $6600; books and supplies, $1500; personal expenses, $1200; and other fees, $1395, for an estimated annual total of $21,256 for in-state residents and $30,000 for out-of-state residents. Graduate student housing consists of 20 units of efficiency apartments. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.

Seventy-one percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time; 48% have had an average of 10 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from the Northeast (81%). Thirty-eight percent are women, 14% are minorities, and 5% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 27; ages range from 22 to 48. Fifty-two percent enter directly from undergraduate school. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 48%, business; 14%, engineering; 5%, economics; 5%, liberal arts; and 5%, math and science. In 2006, 3 graduate business degrees were awarded.
