Andrews University, School of Business History

Andrews University, founded in 1874, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The 1600-acre campus is located in a small town 20 miles north of South Bend, Indiana. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 3195.

The School of Business was founded in 1974 and is located on the main campus, in its own building. Courses also are offered at Portland, or (MBA) and Trinidad (MBA). The basic educational approach is to prepare committed persons equipped intellectually, socially, and morally to be competent, responsible, and professional businesspeople.

Andrews University, School of Business Academics

The SBA offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science in Administration in Church Administration (MSA). The strongest areas of study are economics and management. The most popular course is management.

Thirty-three total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 9 elective credits. Required courses include:

• Strategic Management
• Global Macroeconomics Analysis
• Operations/Managerial Economics
• Marketing Strategy

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements If a student has taken the approximate equivalent of any of the required core courses as an advanced undergraduate course with a minimum of B, that particular required course may be waived and replaced by an elective.

Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time or part time is 1 1/2 years; maximum, 6 years.

There are 14 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 80% hold a doctorate. Average number of credit hours faculty teach is 8; average business class size is 15.

Andrews University, School of Business Unique Programs

Library

The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 665,000 volumes, 656,000 microform items, and 110,850 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 22,355 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in economics, management, and marketing. Students have access to such databases and networks as ABI/INFORM, EconLit, Lexis/Nexis, RIA, and General Business File ASAP. Other opportunities for research consist of OCLC, WorldCat, more than 81 licensed databases and MelCAt (Michigan-wide union catalog with patron-initiated interlibrary loan services and book delivery service).

Computers

Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The business school has its own computer facilities, consisting of 60 computers with Internet access, word processing, spreadsheets, database, graphics, and other varieties of software. All students and staff may use the laboratory 6 days a week.

Career and Job Placement

Placement services are extensive. Placement services for alumni include comprehensive assistance.

International Students

International students must take the TOEFL. International students must score 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT) or 90 on the Internet-Based (iBT) version. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health consisting of tuberculosis testing and MMR immunization, and proof of adequate funds to cover 1 year of study plus a $5000 deposit. Financial aid is available for these students but is limited. The application deadline for fall entry is March 1.

Calendar

The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 4 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the day and evening.

Andrews University, School of Business Admissions

A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0 and a GMAT score of 400. The formula for using the GPA and GMAT scores is (200 x GPA) + GMAT, or minimum 1000. Most important admissions factors are academic accomplishments and ability, GMAT results, and letters of recommendation. A strong mathematics background is required.

The average GPA was 3.18. Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited.

Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, 2 transcripts, GMAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $40, and 2 letters of recommendation. The application deadlines are March 15 for winter entry; October 15, spring; January 15, summer. Students are notified of the admissions decision four weeks maximum after a completed application and all official supporting documents have been received. The latest acceptable test date for fall entry is July 15. Once accepted, students may defer admission The applicant must submit a formal requset for deferral; after action of the Graduate Admissions committee, a formal letter of deferral is given indicating a new date of admission.

Andrews University, School of Business Financial Aid

About 91% of graduate business school students receive financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships, for a total average of $19,268 annually; maximum $32,650. Stipends and programs available for minority students include university endowed scholarships. The FAFSA is required. The application deadline is March 1 for fall entry.

Tuition for all students is $700 per credit, or $23,100 per year. On-campus room and board costs approximately $9000; books and supplies, $2200; personal expenses, $3000; and other fees, $398, for an estimated annual total of $37,698. Graduate student housing consists of on-campus apartments.

Andrews University, School of Business Students

Twenty-six percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time. The greatest percentage of students are from foreign countries (70%). Seventy percent are women, 65% are minorities, and 70% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 33; ages range from 22 to 55. In 2006, 8 graduate business degrees were awarded.
