Northwestern Michigan College Academics
Northwestern Michigan College, located in Traverse, Michigan, is a community college with a lot to offer its students. NMC has more than 60 programs of study including Aviation, Business Administration, Computer Information Technology, Culinary Arts, Healthcare, Law Enforcement, Legal Assistant, Visual Communications and more. It also has a vocational division providing degrees and certificates in occupational specialty programs. Northwestern Michigan College is also the home to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy helping students to become licensed as a mariner as either a Deck Officer or Engineering Officer. NMC offers day, evening, weekend, and online courses to help you register for classes that suit your schedule and all of your credits will be able to transfer to any 4-year school in Michigan. Northwestern Michigan College has partnered up with ten different Michigan Universities to offer their students the opportunity to continue their education onto Bachelor’s programs, Master’s programs and even Doctoral programs. NMC specifically has Certificate of Achievements, Associates in Applied Science (AAS), Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Associate in General Studies (AGS), and Associates in Science and Arts (ASA). You can enjoy small classrooms allowing you a more personal education with their average class size at 20 students. NMC also has many services available to help its students fulfill their academic needs. They have a Writing Center, Tutoring Center, Tutoring Resources, as well as Support Services. Plus, whenever you need a break from your studies and want to enjoy a little rest and relaxation, NMC is close to beaches, skiing and downtown.
Northwestern Michigan College Admissions
Northwestern Michigan College is a community college that usually accepts any student with a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. There is a one-time fee to apply, you can apply online using a credit card, you can print the application and mail it in, or you can apply in person at the Admissions Office. You will need your high school transcripts and you can include your results from AP courses and the ACT. You will then need to apply for financial aid and complete a placement test. You can opt out of the test if you can submit qualifying ACT scores to substitute for the exam. Upon completion of the admissions process, you will attend an orientation where you will have the opportunity to meet with an advisor and register for your first semester of classes. Finally, you will pay for the classes. To pay you can go online, pay in person, or mail in your payment. They also have a deferred payment plan for those who cannot pay for the courses all up front. There is a non-refundable fee for use of the deferred payment plan method.
Tuition is based upon whether you are within the district, within the state, or out-of-state/international. Fees are standard costs not dependent on your geographical location.
Northwestern Michigan College Financial Aid
The first step in acquiring financial aid is to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is available online. It is the application required to get approved for student loans, and government grants. Also, check into any scholarships and grants that you may be able apply for – researching is very important. Northwestern Michigan College also offers work-study programs that you can look into to help offset the cost of your education. NMC Foundation also offers the most scholarship money to the most students than any other community college in Michigan.
Northwestern Michigan College Students
Northwestern Michigan College offers student housing in their residence halls with an all-inclusive fee that allows students to take advantage of all the residence halls have to offer. A great way to meet new friends, staying in residence halls also gives you the opportunity to not have to worry about grocery shopping with their flexible meal plans. Apartments are also available on campus for those wanting to stay nearby and rent. The residence halls are available for rent during the summer months and are great for use for conferences. Parking on campus lots requires a sticker issued by the college, but is free for students and faculty. There is a fee for replacement or additional stickers, though. Handicapped parking is available as well as guest temporary parking stickers. Overnight parking is an option in designated parking lots. You can purchase your course books and supplies at the local bookstore. For those students who would like to work or who are in need of some extra cash, look into the student employment that NMC has available.
Besides living in residence halls, another great way to meet people and to add to your resume is to join one of the many student organizations that NMC has to offer. With such a wide variety of organizations, there is truly something for everyone: Engineering Club, iDance, International Student Club, Anime Club, Astronomy Club, NMC Magazine, Pen & Paper Role Playing Guild, Phi Theta Kappa, Real World Experience, Dagorhir, Honors Program, Native American Student Organization, SPECTRUM, Student Christianity Ministry, Students for the Environment, Student Government Association, VOX, White Pine Press, and WNMC, which is the student-run local FM radio station.
Northwestern Michigan College Athletics
Northwestern Michigan College offers Physical Education courses that can be used as electives to complete a degree. These courses range from health and fitness to outdoor activities and more. The classes that are available are: Fitness circuit, Yoga, Pilates, Aerobic workout, Aerobic dance, Step aerobics, Lap Swim, Winter Travel and Camping, Backpacking, Caving, Rock climbing, Snow Shoeing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, Soccer, Weightlifting, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, Kuntaw, Judo, Swing, Latin and Slow Dancing, and Hip-hop Dance. NMC also has fitness centers that you can join for a fee and intramural sports such as kickball, flag football, dodgeball, soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
