Introduction

Established in 1946 as South Central Technical College; the institute revised its mission in 2005, and transformed from a technical institute to a comprehensive community college called South Central College or SCC. Since its inception, the college boasts a history of academic excellence. It is a part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU). This two-year comprehensive community college is located in North Mankato, Minnesota. It also operates a campus in Faribault, and South Central Online.

Academics

South Central College is fully accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The institute also holds several discipline based accreditations from reputed nationally recognized agencies such as National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, American Dental Association, National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Minnesota Board of Nursing, National Registry of EMT, and Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

SCC offers more than 150 programs as Associate of Applied Science (AAS), Associate of Science (AS) degrees, certificates, and diplomas. Students can choose from over 50 technical career majors including liberal arts and sciences, agribusiness office specialist/manager, agribusiness production, accounting, business management, culinary arts, farm business management, marketing management, office administration & technology, restaurant management, and small business management.

The Liberal Arts and Sciences options present easy transfer of credit to a four-year University, as well as a range of academic courses for lifelong learning. The full time students can complete these degree programs within a period of two years. Some of the programs with certificate or diploma options may be easily completed within a shorter period of time.

South Central College brings quality online education to your doorsteps. You can now further your education or get a career certificate from the comfort of your home. The online programs and courses are best suited for individuals who are unable to attend a traditional college due to various reasons. The online degrees and certificates prepare students for diverse professions such as community social service, legal administrative assistant, administrative assistant, client relations specialist, medical laboratory technician, phlebotomy, web programming, and child development.

Admissions

Applicants seeking admission to SCC must send the completed application form along with official transcripts (high school diploma or GED certificate) and ACT/ SAT score to South Central College. Getting a transfer to the college is easy, and students seeking a transfer must send the application form along with official transcripts from all previously attended institutes. International students are also encouraged to apply for admission to SCC. Students whose native language is not English must take the take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (T.O.E.F.L.).

Financial Aid

South Central College believes in providing equal educational opportunities for all, and hence it provides financial aid programs for the needy and deserving students. In 2010, the foundations on the Faribault and North Mankato Campuses awarded more than $1/4 Million dollars in scholarships. All students seeking financial aid must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The funds for the scholarships are raised in various ways such as community-wide fund drives, staff, faculty, and alumni contributions, grants, earnings on endowed funds, and the special fundraising events.

The Presidential Scholarship offered at SCC is a full-tuition scholarship fund available to those admitted as full-time students for the fall semester. The students must possess leadership skills and a GPA of 3.75 or above to qualify for this award. Each year, the foundation volunteers work hard to raise funds for the scholarship programs.

Students

Student life at South Central College presents an environment for overall personality development and skills advancement. The activities and events organized on the campus promote respect and understanding of cultures. The campus is the perfect place where the students come together to study, recreate and make lifelong friendships. The Student Senate is an active student governing body elected each fall and spring term. It acts as the voice of the student body, and organizes a variety of activities throughout the year.

The SCC campus hosts a variety of clubs and organizations based on the diverse interests of the students. Some of the organizations are Business Professionals of America (BPA), Delta Epsilon Chi (DEX), Postsecondary Agriculture Students (PAS), Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), SkillsUSA, Student Nurses Association (SNA), and Speech and Debate Team (Forensics).

Media and Publications:

South Central Spotlight is the student-operated newspaper of the College.

Campus Facilities:

The Center of Career Development and Counseling offers personal and professional counseling services to the students for free. There are licensed counselors available to help you in your career, and educational concerns. The counseling services are provided in the following areas: pre-admissions testing, career counseling, self esteem, career planning assessments, career planning resources, personal counseling, self confidence, self image, interpersonal issues, and parenting concerns.

SCC also provides a variety of tutoring services to the students. The services include effective time management, reading to understand and remember, understanding your learning style, note taking techniques, test taking techniques, and dealing with test anxiety. Smarthinking is an online tutoring service available for subjects including math, accounting, statistics, chemistry, physics, economics, writing, and Spanish.

South Central College offers a variety of disability services for the students with documented disabilities. It believes in providing equal educational opportunities for such students through special facilities and reasonable accommodation. The staff strives hard to ensure that the students with disabilities get the equal access to services, programs and activities.

North Mankato takes great pride in its high quality of health care, education, and industry. The community boasts a vibrant industrial, commercial, and agricultural climate. It offers a wide range of entertainment options for individuals as well as families. The activities include water sports on the nearby lakes, a provincial shopping center golf, skiing, and theatre performances.

Additional School Information

South Central College has a well established relationship with regional businesses and industries that helps it provide good employment opportunities for the students and graduates. Each year, the Center for Business and Industry (CBI) at SCC serves more than 15,000 people with credit and non-credit education and training. The center assists businesses, government and non-profit organizations improve their performance to meet the diverse challenges of both global and regional economies.
