Introduction

Divas Unlimited Academy (DUA) is a for-profit, private institution of postsecondary education in Saint John. Saint John is a large suburb of the city of St. Louis, Missouri. The school offers certificate level programs in various beauty-related fields such as cosmetology, manicuring, and esthetician. It is an institution with only one location and it is a relatively small school, with a handful of students in each term and only a few staff/instructors. It has been in operation since 1999.

Academics

Divas Unlimited Academy has been approved by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences to offer its programs. The school offers a total of four different programs that may lead to many more future careers. The programs are: Cosmetology, Esthetician, Manicuring and Instructor Training. The courses are designed to be completed within 11- 55 weeks depending on whether the student is enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis. The programs involve a total of 400-1500 hours in all. Classes are offered Monday-Friday. Full-time students will attend during the day and part-time students have the option of attending either daytime or evening classes. Students at DUA gain a large portion of their knowledge from the experience they accrue performing actual jobs on real paying customers. All kinds of beauty services are performed and they include but are not limited to: hair styling, nails, eyebrows, eyelashes, facials and makeup. This school itself is in fact a top notch beauty salon. Career opportunities for graduates of the academy are varied. The school is an excellent choice for people looking to move forward professionally in beauty and cosmetic services. It can also help its students in sales and management work related to this field, or even to prepare someone for becoming an entrepreneur in the beauty industry. The highest academic level of the programs at DUA is the certificate level being that it is a vocational school.

Admissions

Getting into this academy is relatively easy. The school has a simple application process. Students seeking to attend must be able to provide valid proof of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED), a photo ID and pay an enrollment fee.

Students

The student population is relatively low, not exceeding a dozen in most years. Of these, almost all are local residents of the greater St. Louis area or at least from Missouri. About half of the student body is enrolled on a full-time basis, the other half are part-time. Night course offerings are fairly common among the part-time students. All students are commuters to campus as this school does not offer any student housing facilities. This academy has a high success rate with over 90% of students completing their programs.

Student Enrollment Demographics

Local Community

The academy is located, as mentioned, in Saint John, which is a satellite city of St. Louis, Missouri. The city has a population of almost 7,000 and comprises a total of only 1.4 square miles. The town’s commercial center falls along the central St. Charles Rock Road (Route 180). This is a historical route that was the original connection between the early settlements at St. Louis and St. Charles, among the first in the Missouri River Valley. The area is rich in history and also in recreational opportunities for students. Students will find that they have plenty to occupy themselves with in the time that they are not attending courses and studying.
