Introduction

One of the most well-known community colleges in the state, East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) holds the distinction of allowing students to excel at both academics and athletics alike. With campuses in five different counties, the school provides an extensive network of education to citizens in Mississippi, and convenient locations only make it easier to earn an associate degree or diploma.

The school’s course of study combines traditional academic classes with more technically oriented fields of study, meaning that no matter the reason for going to college, this is a place that allows students to pursue a wide variety of opportunities.

History

Originally founded in the 1920s, EMCC has been providing quality education to the citizens of Mississippi for close to a century. A number of famous athletes got their start at the college, including LeGarrette Blount. With athletics a large part of life at the college, many students are also accomplished on the field, as well as in the classroom.

Academics

EMCC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Sciences and offers students the chance to earn associate degrees as well as various diplomas. The most popular degree-seeking programs are the Associate of Applied Science degree and the Associate of Arts degree. A number of more technical programs, including those in the mechanics and culinary arts fields, are also very popular with students.

In addition to the opportunities to learn a technical career or an associate’s degree, the college also offers a number of adult education and GED-oriented courses to community members. Because EMCC understands that not everyone can attend classes during regular school hours, it is possible to take weekend or night classes, and a growing number of courses are also being offered online.

Most Popular Fields of Study

Admissions

Prospective students must submit a completed application form, along with SAT or ACT scores. It is also important to provide proof of GED or high school diploma, an official high school transcript, and in the case of some departments, letters of recommendation. Students who are interested in applying for on-campus housing should also complete the housing form and include it with the application. The school runs on a semester system, meaning that applications should be submitted at least a semester ahead of one’s intended entry date.

Financial Aid

At EMCC, it is understood that college is a major investment. As an accredited school, students attending are eligible for national and federal student financial aid in the form of loans and grants. Once accepted to the college, students should immediately complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. Sometimes, the Department of Education requires further verification of information on the form. For students who are feeling a little overwhelmed with the entire process, or for anyone who needs assistance figuring out the best way to pay for college, counselors in the Office of Financial Aid are always available during business hours for meetings.

Students

Numerous activities are offered outside of the classroom. Students can choose from a number of extracurricular activities, including athletics and clubs and organizations. There is a student newspaper, and there are occasional school-sponsored trips, which is a great way to get to know fellow classmates and enjoy the college experience.

For those who are interested in a more traditional college experience, complete with life in the dorms, there are opportunities on some of the college’s campuses for on-campus housing. Otherwise, the school is well situated for commuters, with campuses in bustling areas that are easy to get to within the various service areas.

Athletics

Athletics are a big part of student life, with the East Mississippi Lions ranking big in a number of different leagues. Students can choose from a number of sports, with the men’s basketball and women’s soccer teams the most popular on campus. Other men’s sports include baseball, football, soccer, and golf. Women can join the softball, golf, or basketball teams, as well as the cheerleading squad.
