Introduction

Stanly Community College, also referred to as SCC, is a public, coeducational community college located in Albemarle, North Carolina. It is a member of the North Carolina Community College System. Apart from the Albemarle campus, SSC also operates a Crutchfield Campus located in Locust. The Stanly Community College Foundation Inc. was founded in April 1978 by a group of trustees to ensure the best use of the donations and funds received by the college. With striking buildings encircled by rolling hills and beautiful valleys combined with high quality education, Stanly Community College helps students launch an amazing career in the field of their choice. SSC aims to provide learning opportunities to all, regardless of economic status, creed, ethnic race or background.

Stanly Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It awards associate’s degrees, diplomas, certificates in diverse areas of study such as human services technology, information systems security, medical assisting, cosmetology, advertising & graphic design, computer information, internetworking apprentice, criminal justice, early childhood, and human services. The College provides adult education programs through which it imparts skills such as fluency in good English, high school diploma, daily living skills, and personality development for a new job.

The Continuing Education Division at SSC serves the community in the areas of basic skills, adult high school, health care, computer training, professional and business/industry certifications, protective services, and much more. SCC serves nearly 10,000 curriculum, continuing education, and basic skills to the students each year.

Stanly Community College offers special military programs for the veterans, reservists, and National Guard. It is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity College (SOC). The college accepts credits from American Council on Education (ACE) and DANTES.

The Small Business Center (SBC) is committed to the economic development and growth for new, established, and prospective business managers and owners. The College has been meeting the requirements of the region’s workforce for over 40 years.

Stanly Community College identifies the educational requirements of students who are unable to attend regular college due to a full time job or other responsibilities. Such students can earn an entire degree online through the various programs offered by SSC. The college confers online degrees, diplomas and certificates such as Associate in Arts Transfer Core, Associate in Arts, Adult High School (AHS), School Age Substitute Teacher, NC School Age Child Care Credentials, and more. Admissions

Students

The student life at SSC is vibrant and active. The Student Government Association (SGA) is the governing body for the various student clubs within the college. It acts like the voice of the students, and works for enriching the campus experience through activities and events. Students can join an existing club or create a new one. Some of the student clubs at Stanly Community College include Biomedical Equipment, College Transfer, Cosmetology, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Medical Assisting, Multicultural, Phi Beta Lambda, Phi Theta Kappa, and Simulation & Game Development. Though there is not a very strong Greek presence on the campus, but there are several honor societies that students can be part of.

The Careen Center at SSC offers a variety of services such as career counseling, interest testing and personality profiles, educational and career information, computerized guidance programs, career planning assistance, job referral, interview skills, and resume preparation. There is also a Counseling Center that assists students in making the transition to college. It provides counseling on student interests and aptitudes, vocational goals, personal issues, and academic concerns.

Media and Publications:

Stanly Community College Television (SCC-TV) is student-operated television station of the college. It is located on Time Warner Cable Channel 21 and operates 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

The Muse is a student-operated Literary and Visual Arts magazine, published annually.

SCC Connections is the college magazine, published twice a year by Stanly Community College.

Campus Facilities:

SSC offers library facilities at both the Albemarle campus and Crutchfield campus. Students will find various print and online reference materials in the library. The collection includes magazines, newspapers, government documents, nursing/medical e-books local, local, national and world newspapers. There is a 24/7 reference librarian available to assist the students.

Athletics

Stanly Community College’s athletic department sponsors men’s and women’s sports teams that compete in diverse varsity sports such as baseball, softball, and soccer. The athletic teams participate in the Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in men’s baseball and women’s softball. The teams are nicknamed the Eagles. Their official mascot is the Stanly Eagle. The Stanley athletes can join the Booster club to network with community leaders. They organize summer camps each year to enhance the college experience of the students.

Stanly Community College is proud partner of the global Green Initiative. It encourages students, faculty members and staff to work together throughout the year on various projects to support this initiative. These activities enrich the student life and benefit the environment at the same time. Everyone is encouraged to save the environment, reduce, reuse and recycle.
