Georgian Court University is a private Roman Catholic university, intended mostly for women, located in Lakewood, New Jersey. George Jay Gould I was the son of Jay Gould (1836-1892) and Helen Day Miller (1838-1889). After their marriage Edith and George believed Lakewood would be an ideal location for their new home and hired the New York architect, Bruce Price, to build their home, which they named, Georgian Court. Since the sandy soils of the New Jersey Pine Barrens were not suitable for cultivating exotic plants, 5,000 cartloads of fine loam were brought to Georgian Court from neighboring Monmouth County. Georgian Court is also home to the Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum. On February 4, 1985, Georgian Court was designated a National Historic Landmark. There are approximately forty-five court tennis courts remaining in the world today and only several thousand active players.
