New Mexico Highlands University, School of Business Administration History
New Mexico Highlands University, founded in 1893, is a public, coeducational institution. The 175-acre campus is located in a small town 123 miles north of Albuquerque. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 3514. Enrollment figures in the above capsule are approximate.
The School of Business Administration was founded in 1978 and is located on the main campus. Courses also are offered at Rio Rancho, Farmington, Santa Fe, and on-line (MBA). The basic educational approach is an intensive problem-solving one, featuring case studies and simulations across the spectrum of decision areas within business organizations and emphasizing the integrative nature of managerial responsibilities.
New Mexico Highlands University, School of Business Administration Academics
The MBA Program offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Other programs include departmental work-study and internships. The most popular courses are Software Development and International Business.
Thirty-seven total credits are required to complete the MBA. Required courses include:

The maximum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full or part time is 5 years.
In a rrecent year, there were 8 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 75% held a doctorate; there were 4 part-time faculty, of whom 50% held a doctorate. Average number of courses faculty teach is 12; average business class size is 20.

Library
The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 250,000 volumes, and subscribes to 1200 periodicals. Students have access to such databases and networks as Dow Jones Retrieval Service and Dial Index.
Computers
Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The business school has its own computer facilities, consisting of 2 PC laboratories and a variety of software, including spreadsheet, database, word processing, and graphics programs. Mainframe usage is also available.
Career and Job Placement
The major most in demand by companies recruiting in 2006 was management information systems. Placement services are extensive and are available through the university placement office.
International Students
International students must take the TOEFL. International students must score 540 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT). They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover the entire period of study. Financial aid is available for these students and consists of graduate assistantships.
Calendar
The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 16 weeks long; summer sessions, 8 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only and weekends.
New Mexico Highlands University, School of Business Administration Admissions
A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0. Most important admissions factors are grades in upper-level courses, essays, and letters of recommendation. A strong mathematics background is required.
Transfers are not accepted.
Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a nonrefundable application fee of $15, 2 letters of recommendation, and a detailed resume. The application deadlines are July 1 for fall entry; November 1, spring; May 1, summer. Once accepted, students may defer admission if they are enrolled on a nondegree status.
New Mexico Highlands University, School of Business Administration Financial Aid
In a recent year, about 65% of graduate business school students received financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships. The FAFSA, the school’s own financial statement, and the previous year’s tax return are required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.
Tuition for in-state residents is $2424 per year. Nonresidents pay $10,248 per year. On-campus room and board costs approximately $4000; books and supplies, $1000. Graduate student housing is available in single rooms with private bath, telephone, and computer hookup to the university’s mainframe. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.
New Mexico Highlands University, School of Business Administration Students
Thirty-three percent of a recent graduate business school class were enrolled full time; 20% have had an average of 5 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from New Mexico (85%). Fifty-six percent are women. The average age at entrance is 25; ages range from 22 to 38. Thirty-six percent enter directly from undergraduate school. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 61%, business. About 10% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons; 90% remain to receive their degree. In a recent year, 22 graduate business degrees were awarded.
