Plaza College Students
Plaza College is located in the Jackson Heights neighborhood, which is in the New York City borough of Queens. Many Plaza students commute from Manhattan—midtown is only a 15-minute train ride away. Thus, the countless cultural treasures of New York City and the metropolitan area are easily accessible to Plaza College students.
Crime was a serious problem in Jackson Heights, but community intervention over the last two decades has made a big difference. In just one example, grand larceny auto cases decreased by 90 percent from 1990-2008, according to statistics reported by New York City CompuStat. These days, Jackson Heights is often called the “City Within the City,” and has one of the most culturally diverse populations in the United States.
During the summer, there is a farmer’s market every Sunday morning in the Travers Park section of Jackson Heights. In addition, churches of many different denominations are found in the neighborhood, including the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Community United Methodist Church, and the Jackson Heights Jewish Center.
Plaza College offers a relaxed campus atmosphere in an urban setting, with an extensive library, student union, and an Internet café. In fact, the entire campus is equipped with wireless Internet. Because the college is geared toward busy students often working many hours a week, classes are offered in the day, evening, and weekends.
