Polytechnic University, Department of Management History

Polytechnic University, founded in 1854, is a private, coeducational institution. The campus is located in an urban area 1 mile east of New York City. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is approximately 3000.

Courses also are offered at New York City, Long Island, Westchester, and Israel. The basic educational approach is to learn about and improve managerial performance and competitiveness in the domain of technology management.

Polytechnic University, Department of Management Academics

The Department of Management offers the Master of Science in Management (MSM), Master of Science in Organizational Behavior (MSOB), Master of Science in Telecommunications and Information Management (MSTIM), Master of Science in Management of Technology (MSMOT), and Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MSFE) as well as a doctoral program in technology management. Other programs include joint research in technology management and work-study programs consisting of graduate assistantships. The strongest areas of study are management of technology, management information systems, and organizational behavior. The most popular courses are Managing the Innovative Process and Management of the Information Function. Regular programs bring distinguished speakers and visiting professors to campus. Specialists from business present sessions on their topics for case studies, and executives from “case” companies participate in discussions.

Thirty-six total credits are required to complete the MS in Management, including 6 elective credits. Required courses for the MS in Management include:

Required courses for the MSOB include:

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements.

Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 1 year.

There are 11 total full-time graduate business faculty, all of whom hold a doctorate; there are 32 part-time faculty. Faculty salaries are rated average for Category I institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 3; average business class size is 15.

Library

The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 148,000 volumes, 62,000 microform items, and 400 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 6040 periodicals. Students have access to databases and networks in the fields of business and allied subject areas. Other opportunities for research consist of interlibrary loans with New York City and Long Island libraries.

Computers

Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of 331 terminals in 8 general labs as well as departmental labs available for student use.

Career and Job Placement

Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, and are available through the university placement office.

International Students

International students must take the TOEFL. International students must score 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT). They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover the entire length of study. The application deadline for fall entry is June 1.

Calendar

The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 17 weeks long; summer sessions, 7 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only and weekends.

Polytechnic University, Department of Management Admissions

A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0 and a GMAT score of 590. Most important admissions factors are GMAT results, quality of undergraduate school, and academic accomplishments and ability. A strong mathematics background is not required.

The number of applicants for the 2006-2007 class was 408; 361 were accepted; 178 enrolled. Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited.

Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $65, and 2 letters of recommendation. The application deadlines are May 1 for fall entry; October 1, spring; March 1, summer. Students are notified of the admissions decision 2 to 4 weeks after their application is complete. Once accepted, students may defer admission for up to 1 academic year.

Polytechnic University, Department of Management Financial Aid

The FAFSA, the school’s own financial statement, and the previous year’s tax return are required. The application deadline is open for fall entry.

Tuition for all students is $988 per credit, or $17,784 per year. On-campus room and board costs approximately $8500; books and supplies, $1000; personal expenses, $2450; and other fees, $1023, for an estimated annual total of $30,757. Graduate student housing consists of suites and apartments. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.

Sixty-three percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time; 99% have had an average of more than 5 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. Thirty-seven percent are women, 16% are minorities, and 31% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 30; ages range from 22 to 54. In 2006, 130 graduate business degrees were awarded.
