Wagner College, Department of Business Administration History
Wagner College, founded in 1883, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The 105-acre campus is located in an urban area 10 miles southwest of Manhattan. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 2280.
The Department of Business Administration was founded in 1952 and is located on the main campus. The basic educational approach is a mix of the case method and theory.
Wagner College, Department of Business Administration Academics
The Department of Business Administration offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), and Master of Science in Accounting (MS). The strongest areas of study and most popular courses are management, marketing, and finance.
Forty-five total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 6 elective credits. Required courses include:
- Management Decision Making and Negotiation
- Statistics for Managers
- Law and the Manager
- Management Theory and Evaluation
or Organizational Behavior - Economics for Managers
- Financial and Managerial Accounting
- Managerial Finance
- Marketing Management
Students may eliminate or substitute requirements by transferring a limited number of credits.
Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full or part time is 1 year; maximum, 6 years.
There are 9 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 88% hold a doctorate; there are 22 part-time faculty, of whom 45% hold a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated above average for Category llA institutions, based on the AAUP rating system.

Library
The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 300,000 volumes and 225,000 microform items, and subscribes to 11,185 periodicals. Students have access to such databases and networks as Business & Company Resource Center, Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe, and ProQuest. Other opportunities for research consist of the New York City Interlibrary Loan Consortium.
Computers
Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of 75 IBM Pentium PCs. Software includes Word, Excel, Access, and many other programs. The facility is open 7 days a week.
Career and Job Placement
Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, and are available through the university placement office.
International Students
International students must take the TOEFL. International students must score 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT). They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health consisting of the college form completed by a physician, and proof of adequate funds to cover 2 calendar years of study. There is a $75 application fee. Check with the school for current application deadlines.
Calendar
The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 5 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening and weekends.
Wagner College, Department of Business Administration Admissions
A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0 and a GMAT score of 500. Most important admissions factors are academic accomplishments and ability, GMAT results, and difficulty of undergraduate major. A strong mathematics background is not required.
The number of applicants for the 2006-2007 class was 170; 154 were accepted; 140 enrolled. The average GPA was 3.2. Transfers are accepted.
Students may begin the MBA program in the fall and spring. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $50, 2 letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. The application deadlines are August 1 for fall entry; December 1, spring. Students are notified on a rolling basis of the admissions decision. The latest acceptable test date for fall entry is June. Once accepted, students may defer admission for up to 1 semester or 1 year upon written request.
Wagner College, Department of Business Administration Financial Aid
About 44% of graduate business school students receive financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships. The FAFSA, the school’s own financial statement, and the previous year’s tax return are required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.
Tuition for all students is $840 per credit, or $15,120 per year. Books and supplies cost approximately $750; personal expenses, $1250, for an estimated annual total of $17,120. Graduate student housing is limited.
Wagner College, Department of Business Administration Students
Seventy-eight percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time. The greatest percentage of students are from New York (78%). Forty-eight percent are women, 15% are minorities, and 2% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 24; ages range from 21 to 55. Twenty percent enter directly from undergraduate school. About 14% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons. In 2006, 29 graduate business degrees were awarded.
