    Lake Erie College, founded in 1856, is a private, coeducational institution. The 48-acre campus is located in a suburban area 29 miles northeast of Cleveland. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is approximately 1000.

    The Division of Management Studies was founded in 1981 and is located on the main campus. Courses also are offered in Willoughby (MBA program and management seminars). The basic educational approach is is one that emphasizes broadening functional horizons and deepening decision-making skills. The program integrates theory, cases, and seminars.

    The MBA program offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Other programs include domestic and international internships. The strongest areas of study are general management and health care management.

    Thirty-six total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 9 elective credits. Required courses include:

    • Quantitative Business Analysis
    • Managerial Economics
    • Organizational Behavior
    • Managerial Accounting
    • Financial Management
    • Marketing Strategies
    • Information Systems for Managerial Decision Making
    • Policy Development
    • Business Law

    Students may eliminate or substitute requirements by transferring up to 21 semester credits of graduate work completed elsewhere. Students may substitute an elective for a required course if they can demonstrate substantial professional experience or have completed several undergraduate courses in the subject area.

    The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 1 year; maximum, 7 years. For students attending part time, the minimum is 2 years; maximum, 7 years.

    There are 7 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 57% hold a doctorate; there are 4 part-time faculty, 1 of whom holds a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated average for Category IIB institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 6; average business class size is 13.

    Library

    The Lincoln Library houses a collection of more than 79,900 volumes, 11,280 microform items, and 570 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 1430 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in management. Students have access to such databases and networks as Moody’s, InfoTrac, and the Internet.

    Computers

    Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of the Lincoln Library PC lab with 18 PCs, a language learning center with 20 PCs, and the Austin Science lab with 18 PCs. Facilities are open 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 11 p.m. Sunday.

    Career and Job Placement

    Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time. Placement services for alumni include on-line services for resume posting. Placement is available through the college placement office.

    International Students

    International students must take the TOEFL or the University of Michigan Language Test. International students must score 590 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT). They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health consisting of a UN international health certificate, and proof of adequate funds to cover 1 year of study. The application deadline for fall entry is rolling.

    Calendar

    The school operates on a trimester basis. Trimesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 6 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only.

    A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0 and a GMAT score of 450. Most important admissions factors are management potential, work experience, and academic accomplishments and ability. A strong mathematics background is not required.

    The number of applicants for the 2006-2007 class was 40; 39 were accepted; 29 enrolled. The average GPA was 3.3; average GMAT score was 550. Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited through graduate fairs and the Cleveland Area Consortium.

    Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $30, a resume, and 3 professional references and must arrange for a personal interview. The application deadline is rolling for fall entry. Students are notified of the admissions decision when all application materials are received.

    Lake Erie College, Division of Management Studies Financial Aid

    In a recent year, about 12% of graduate business school students received financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships. The FAFSA is required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.

    Tuition for all students is $545 per credit, or $9810 per year. Books and supplies cost approximately $550; personal expenses, $1000; and other fees, $810, for an estimated annual total of $12,170. Graduate student housing is not available. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.

    All of the current graduate business school sclass are enrolled part-time. Ninety-eight percent have had an average of 12 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from Ohio (94%). Fifty-two percent are women and 6% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 33; ages range from 21 to 48. Two percent enter directly from undergraduate school; 1% already have a graduate degree. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 48%, business; 18%, math and science; 10%, engineering; 8%, economics; 8%, liberal arts; and 8%, social sciences. In 2006, 22 graduate business degrees were awarded.
