Introduction

The Willoughby-Eastlake School of Practical Nursing program opened its doors in September 1962 to train those interested in becoming practical nurses. Since its inception, the program has grown and developed to create society growth and advancement of technology. In 1964, Willoughby-Eastlake School City School District commenced a high school practical nursing program, with the request from the Board of Education. This helped the growing community to meet the need for health care providers. After completion of the course from the high school, the graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN Examination to become licensed as a Practical Nurse.

Admissions

Students seeking admission to the Willoughby-Eastlake School of Practical Nursing are usually considered on individual merits, without any discrimination on the basis of creed, age, national or ethnic sex, race, color, origin, marital status, political affiliations, handicap, or beliefs. The applicants must have a high school diploma or passing G.E.D. score, and must appear for the NLN’s PAX-PN exam. Applicants also need to send references from two professionals, a commitment of well-being, and a good character certificate.

The Willoughby-Eastlake School of Practical Nursing also supports the concepts embraced in the American Disability Act of 1990. The enrollees must successfully complete the academic and clinical objectives of the program in an apt manner, implementing the necessary functions integral to the program. The applicants also need to show a physician’s report of physical examination before entrance to school, any immunization as required by the program, and satisfactory results of skin test for tuberculosis. Other important requirements and skills needed for admission are physical strength, auditory acuity, motor skills, mobility, visual acuity, critical thinking, social behavior, communication, ethical behavior, and stress management.

Financial Aid

Willoughby-Eastlake School identifies the need of those students who are unable to pursue their education or chosen career due to lack of financial support. Hence, the institute makes financial aid available to the adult students accepted into the practical nursing program. In order to check for the eligibility and receive a financial aid, the applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online form. Those who are interested to apply for William D. Ford Federal Direct Student Loan must complete FAFSA.

The Direct Student Loan is disbursed to the school through two separate payments from the U.S. Department of Education. One half of the loan is disbursed in November, while the other half is disbursed in March. The school follows the policies and procedures laid down by the Auditor of the State of Ohio, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Treasurer’s Office with all disbursements. The loan funds are first applied toward tuition costs. Any of the leftover funds are refunded to the students.

Students

Willoughby-Eastlake School offers full student support and a learning environment for the future professionals to grow and develop. The students who graduate from the institute can generally find employment in different fields of health care settings such as rehabilitation facilities, long term care facilities, physician offices, assisted living facilities, and home health care. The campus offers modern facilities to enable students get the most of their education. The students can easily access the various resources at the institute as well as the hospital libraries. There are a variety of reference books available on the division. There is also a computer lab available to students after school hours, if the arrangements have been made ahead of time.

There is also a career center at the institute which assists and guides the students take the right step into the health care industry. The students are encouraged to take part in social activities, sports and civic functions held within and outside the campus. Students are also encouraged to have outside interests and friends, and to maintain in their church affiliations. The practical nurse should identify the need for participation in functions other than their schoolwork to assist their development into the well prepared practical nurse.
