Saint Joseph’s University is a private, coeducational Roman Catholic university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Today, Saint Joseph’s University is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Saint Joseph’s University educates over 7,000 students each year in over 40 undergraduate majors, 10 special-study options, 20 study abroad programs, 52 graduate study areas, and an Ed.D. In 1978, Saint Joseph’s College was elevated to the rank of university. That September morning marked the beginning of a rich and exciting history for Saint Joseph’s University. Saint Joseph’s was recognized as a university by the Secretary of Education of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on July 24, 1978. In addition, the residence of the Cardinal for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is located adjacent to campus, and many University students and staff await the purchase of the land by the University. Undergraduate Arts and Sciences Programs: Graduate Arts and Sciences Programs: Undergraduate Business Programs: Graduate Business Programs: Post-MBA Certificate Program: Saint Joseph’s University is home of the Hawks, the university’s athletic program. Along with the Atlantic 10, Saint Joseph’s is a member of the Philadelphia Big 5, enhancing rivalries with Temple University and Villanova University. In 2004, the Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team finished with a undefeated regular season suffering their only loss to Xavier University in the Atlantic 10 tournament. The Saint Joseph’s basketball teams play most of their home games at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on the school’s campus, while some games are played at the Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Saint Joseph’s University also offers 30 intramural and recreational programs. Their historic rival has been the Explorers of La Salle University, Their recent major rival, especially in men’s basketball, is Villanova University (known locally as the Holy War (Villanova vs. Saint Joseph’s University will host first and second round games of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament.

Saint Joseph's University Academics

St. Joseph’s University (SJU) offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in arts and sciences and business. Undergraduate degrees include Asian studies, chemistry and medieval studies. Graduate programs include education, psychology and criminal justice.

The Religious studies department at St. Joseph’s is a study of Christian Theology coupled with a broad overview of religions. Classes in this major include American Catholicism, Gender and Christian Spirituality and Church and State.

The Actuarial Science Program at SJU helps students form strong analytical skills. Courses taught in this program include calculus, mathematics of finance and database management.

The Health Services program at SJU leans heavily on a carative model, patients coping with a disease, and follows that philosophy. Courses in the Health Services curriculum include health and society, health and the school aged child and organic chemistry.

The Erivan K. Haub School of Business offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a bevy of fields including accounting, finance, and financial services. The school also runs the Center for Consumer Research and the Energy School which works to provide a forum for energy risk management.

Saint Joseph’s University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The Erivan K. Haub Business School is accredited by the International Association for Management Education.

New Students must fill out either a Saint Joseph’s University Application or the Common Application by at least the February before the students first semester. Along with the application students must pay a $60.00 fee, submit their official high school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores, submit a letter of recommendation from either a high school guidance counselor or teacher and complete an essay.

Transfer students must fill out all of the above including an official college transcript from each attended and a course syllabi from all college science and business courses.

SJU will also accept International students.

There may be different admission requirements for special programs in the school.

Saint Joseph's University Financial Aid

Approximately 85% of all SJU students receive aid in some form. The school offers grants, loans and work study programs.

Students must fill out the FAFSA to be considered.

Grants funded through SJU include the Federal Pell Grant, the PHEAA State Grant and the Pennsylvania New Economy Technology Scholarship Program.

Work Study Programs are awarded as part of a student’s financial aid package but does not guarantee a job.

Scholarships at SJU include the Villager Debating Scholarship, The Eagles Fly For Leukemia Scholarship and International Merit-Based Scholarships.

Saint Joseph's University Students

SJU offers a Campus Ministry in the context of Catholic Higher Education. Student run clubs and organizations include the Hawks for Life, The Polish Cultural Society and Hawks against Hunger. The school also sponsors many Greek Organizations on campus.

The Sports Complex at SJU offers an 8 lane indoor pool, four racquetball courts, a fitness center and four outdoor tennis courts.

St Josephs was founded in 1851 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school has been ranked high in National Polls by U.S. News and World Report and Business Week.

The Campus at SJU sits on 103 acres in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The campus is known for its gothic architecture and beautiful landscaping.

Saint Joseph's University Athletics

Saint Joseph’s University offers 20 varsity teams all in the NCAA Division I. The Hawks compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Baseball, basketball and rowing are among the sports sponsored by the school.

The Men’s basketball team are the most popular at the school winning seven Atlantic 10 regular season titles and were the last Division I college basketball team to go undefeated in the regular season.
