Century College Academics

The largest two-year community/technical college in all of Minnesota, Century College offers students an excellent opportunity for the learning that will sustain them throughout their time in the workforce. Founded in 1967 under the name of Lakewood Community College, the school became Century College after a merge with Northwest Metro Tech.

Located in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Century College currently has a student population of about 12,000. It manages to follow through on its motto, “Higher Education, Lower Tuition,” by offering a large variety of classes and programs for students to choose from. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, Century College offers over 60 career programs for students to choose from, as well as professional and vocational programs. Those interested in earning a liberal arts transfer degree can also do so, and continue their education at a four-year institution after completing the degree requirements at Century College.

The most popular fields of study at Century College are Liberal Arts, Art and Design, Automotive, Technology, Science, Nursing, EMS, Law Enforcement, and Industry and Industrial Design. Business and Management is still a popular choice, though the focus seems to be shifting towards fields that are more focused on new media and technology. In addition to those programs with a degree in mind, students can also choose to take night or weekend classes through the Continuing Education department or receive one-time training to quality for something in their field.

As a result of so many nontraditional students, Century College offers courses at a number of times, including during traditional class hours, at night, and on the weekends. In keeping with the shifting times, Century College also now offers classes online. A number of the non-degree courses are also offered online, making it that much easier to pick up some knowledge when needed, or to add a specific skill crucial to an ever-changing occupation.

Century College Admissions

Students interested in applying to Century College can pick up an application from the school’s admissions department, or download the complete application form through the school’s website. Those who are first-time college students should provide their high school transcript or GED equivalent, the fully-completed application, and a list of any Advanced Placement (AP) courses taken in high school. Those who may be transferring from another community college should also include any coursework and proof of credits from college-level classes, if they would like to see those courses transfer to Century College.

Not having attended another college or having been out of high school for quite some time does not preclude learners from attending Century College. Just schedule a meeting with someone in the Admissions Department to find out what you specifically need to do to apply, and then act accordingly.

As a college that operates on the semester system, it is best for prospective students to have their applications in before the start of the semester before their intended entry date.

Financial Aid

As college is a very expensive endeavor, even when it is affordable, Century College is interested in making it as affordable as possible for students to attend. This means a very efficient Financial Aid Office, where various counselors can assist students in the entire process of financial aid. Most students at Century College receive some sort of financial aid, and since the school is accredited, students are eligible for both state and national assistance.

For those unsure of what is required, the best bet is to schedule a meeting at the Financial Aid Office, where a counselor can provide assistance in completing the FAFSA, answering any questions, or recommending good avenues to search for need and merit-based scholarships that might make paying for college a little bit easier.
