Salve Regina University, founded in 1934, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The 70-acre campus is located in a suburban area 40 miles from Providence. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 2589.

The Graduate Business Studies was founded in 1976 and is located on the main campus. The basic educational approach is theoretical, with the case method employed as appropriate. The program offers increased emphasis on environmental matters, concern for ethical issues, and technical knowledge and skills.

Salve Regina University, Graduate Business Studies Academics

The Graduate Studies offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science in Management (MS) as well as a joint degree in are individualized programs designed with the directors and the dean. Other programs include internship programs, interdisciplinary programs, and an on-line graduate extension study program leading to the MBA or the MS in management. The strongest areas of study are MBA and th MS in Management. The most popular courses are Management of Human Resources and Ethics for Managers: Theory and Practice. Regular programs bring distinguished speakers and visiting professors to campus, including cooperative programs with the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

Thirty-six total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 9 elective credits. Required courses include:

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements with approval of the graduate program director and the graduate dean.

Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 1 1/2 years; maximum, 5 years. For students attending part time, the minimum is 2 years; maximum, 5 years.

There are 2 total full-time graduate business faculty, both of whom hold a doctorate; there are 9 part-time faculty, of whom 12% hold a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated average for Category llA institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 4; average business class size is 15.

Library

The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 139,161 volumes, 43,146 microform items, and 19,420 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 1041 periodicals. Students have access to such databases and networks as EBSCO/host, Fact Search, Edgar, Hoover’s Online, Thomas Register, Business Source Elite, Firstsearch, Proquest, Lexis/Nexis, Academic Universe, and the HELIN Consortium. Other opportunities for research consist of the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.

Computers

Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of 4 computer labs with more than 120 pieces of IBM-compatible and Mac hardware. Internet access, Microsoft Office, and accounting, statistical, and publishing software are available.

Career and Job Placement

Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time. Placement services for alumni include counseling, a recruitment program, resume writing, occupational information, and a credentials file. Placement is available through the university placement office.

International Students

International students must take the TOEFL. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover the length of study and living expenses. The application deadline for fall entry is March 1.

Calendar

The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 5 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only, weekends, and on-line.

Salve Regina University, Graduate Business Studies Admissions

A bachelor’s degree is required. Most important admissions factors are academic accomplishments and ability, personal statement, and letters of recommendation. A strong mathematics background is required.

The number of applicants for the 2006-2007 class was 81; 62 were accepted; 58 enrolled. Transfers are accepted.

Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, MAT, GRE, or LSAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $50, 2 letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. The application deadlines are open/rolling for fall entry; open/rolling, spring; open/rolling, summer. Students are notified of the admission decision on a rolling basis, usually within 2 weeks of receiving all the required materials. The latest acceptable test date for fall entry is August. Once accepted, students may defer admission for 1 or 2 semesters with the approval of the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Salve Regina University, Graduate Business Studies Financial Aid

About 20% of graduate business school students receive financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships, for a total average of $7500 annually; maximum $11,000. The FAFSA and the previous year’s tax return are required. The application deadline is rolling for fall entry.

Tuition for all students is $350 per credit, or $6300 per year. Graduate student housing is not available. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.

Salve Regina University, Graduate Business Studies Students

Twenty-two percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time; 87% have had an average of 12 to 15 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from Rhode Island (52%). Forty-nine percent are women. The average age at entrance is 31; ages range from 22 to 62. Eight percent enter directly from undergraduate school; 20% already have a graduate degree. About 5% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons; 85% remain to receive their degree. In 2006, 30 graduate business degrees were awarded.
