    Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, founded in 1842, is a public, coeducational institution. The 300-acre campus is located in an urban area in downtown Charleston. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 3302.

    The College of Graduate and Professional Studies was founded in 1974 and is located on the main campus. The basic educational approach is to provide broad professional training in business, utilizing both the theoretical and case approaches.

    The MBA Program offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Other programs include cross-registration with the Medical University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy. The most popular courses are Investments and Entrepreneurship. Regular programs bring distinguished speakers and visiting professors to campus, including the Leadership Forum. Both fall and spring semesters, 4 guest lecturers from various business and government sector leaders speak on leadership in organizations.

    Forty-eight total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 6 elective credits. Required courses include:

    Students may eliminate or substitute requirements by transferring up to 6 hours of graduate course work, if approved.

    Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 2 years; maximum, 6 years. For students attending part time, the maximum is 6 years.

    There are 22 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 77% hold a doctorate; there are 11 part-time faculty, of whom 9% hold a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated above average for Category IIA institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of credit hours faculty teach is 9; average business class size is 20.

    Library

    The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 234,356 volumes, 1,168,656 microform items, and 5807 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 494 periodicals. Students have access to such databases and networks as Mergent Online, Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage, Business Source Premier, Business & Industry, General BusinessFile ASAP, D&B Key Business Ratios, Disclosure, and EconLit. Other opportunities for research consist of access to other libraries.

    Computers

    Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The Citadel’s Computer Center houses a VAX 8530 main computer. There are 350 terminals located around the campus that can be accessed from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. There are also Macs and PCs for student use.

    Career and Job Placement

    Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, and are available through the college placement office.

    International Students

    International students must take the TOEFL. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover 1 year of study. Financial aid is available for these students. Check with the school for current application deadlines.

    Calendar

    The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 7 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only.

    A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GMAT score of 410. The formula for using the GPA and GMAT scores is (200 x GPA) + GMAT, or minimum 1000. Most important admissions factors are a successful interview, letters of recommendation, and grades in upper-level courses. A strong mathematics background is not required.

    The average GMAT score of those accepted for 2006-2007 was 511. Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited through minority publications.

    Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $30, and 2 letters of recommendation. A personal interview may be required. The application deadlines are July 20 for fall entry; December 1, spring; March 20, summer. Students are notified of the admissions decision as soon as possible after materials are received. The latest acceptable test date for fall entry is July 20.

    Stipends and programs are available for minority students. The FAFSA is required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.

    Tuition for in-state residents is $259 per credit. Nonresidents pay $482 per credit. Graduate student housing is available off campus.

    Nine percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time. The greatest percentage of students are from South Carolina (89%). Thirty-six percent are women, 12% are minorities, and 3% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 25; ages range from 21 to 58. In 2006, 49 graduate business degrees were awarded.
