Christian Brothers University, founded in 1871, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The 75-acre campus is located in an urban area in Memphis. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 1776.

The MBA Program was founded in 1987 and is located on the main campus. The basic educational approach is structured around 2 cohort groups of 20 to 25 students formed each year, one in August and one in January. The 30-hour curriculum consists of 10 courses designed so students can focus on one subject area at a time, allowing for more in-depth learning, concentration, and application of each business discipline.

The MBA Program offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Thirty total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 9 elective credits. Required courses include:

  • Managerial Accounting
  • Managerial Finance
  • Managerial Economics
  • Management of Information Systems
  • Strategic Marketing
  • Social, Legal, and Ethical Aspects of Business
  • Business Policy

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements at the discretion of the program director.

The maximum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending part time is 5 years.

There are 7 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 86% hold a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated below average for Category llB institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 4; average business class size is 14.

Library

The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 107,000 volumes and 1439 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 437 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in accounting and marketing. Students have access to databases and networks in the fields of business and allied subject areas. Other opportunities for research consist of the Memphis Public Library and an interlibrary agreement with other area universities.

Computers

Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The business school has its own computer facilities, consisting of 3 computer laboratories, each with 28 Pentium-based PCs. Available software includes Microsoft Office, with Windows XP and 100 megabit wired connections. The entire building is wireless.

Career and Job Placement

Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time. Placement services for alumni include a job clearinghouse and counseling. Placement is available through the university placement office.

International Students

International students must take the TOEFL. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover the duration of study. Financial aid is available for these students. The application deadline for fall entry is open.

Calendar

The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 16 weeks long; summer sessions, 8 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only.

A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GMAT score of 450. The formula for using the GPA and GMAT scores is (200 X GPA) + GMAT, or minimum 1050. Most important admissions factors are GMAT results, work experience, and grades in upper-level courses. A strong mathematics background is required.

23 students enrolled in the 2006-2007 class. The average GPA was 3.67; average GMAT score was 491. Transfers are accepted.

Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, all college transcriptions, GMAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $50, and 2 letters of recommendation. The application deadlines are open for fall entry; open, winter; open, spring. Students are notified of the admissions decision when the application process is complete. The latest acceptable test date for fall entry is June.

Christian Brothers University, MBA Program Financial Aid

The FAFSA is required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.

Tuition for all students is $510 per credit, or $7650 per year. Books and supplies cost approximately $600; and other fees, $130, for an estimated annual total of $8380. Graduate student housing is not available on campus. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.

Christian Brothers University, MBA Program Students

Sixteen percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time. The greatest percentage of students are from the South (96%). Thirty-two percent are women, 19% are minorities, and 5% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 26; ages range from 22 to 56. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 4%, social sciences. In 2006, 69 graduate business degrees were awarded.
