Saint Edward's University, School of Management and Business History
Saint Edward’s University, founded in 1885, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The 160-acre campus is located in an urban area 2 miles from downtown Austin. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 5224.
The School of Management and Business was founded in 1970 and is located on the main campus. Courses also are offered at 1 class location in northwest Austin and 1 corporate location in northeast Austin. The basic educational approach is a combination of the theoretical and the case method.
Saint Edward's University, School of Management and Business Academics
The SMB offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and Ethics (MSOLE), Master of Science in Computer Information Systems (MSCIS), Master of Arts in Human Services (MAHS), and Master of Science in Project Management (MSPM) as well as a joint degree in MBA and MSCIS. Other programs include an internship option in MAHS. The strongest areas of study are business management, management information systems, human resource management, and finance. The most popular courses are in finance and marketing. Regular programs bring distinguished speakers and visiting professors to campus. The Executive Seminar Series brings speakers to campus and allows students to earn 1 to 2 credit hours through research on the speaker’s topic and participation in the series.
Thirty-six total credits are required to complete the MBA. Required courses include:

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements with equivalent graduate-level work or undergraduate-level work in Phase l MBA.
Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 4 terms; maximum, 6 years. For students attending part time, the minimum is 2 years; maximum, 6 years.
There are 16 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 94% hold a doctorate; there are 34 part-time faculty, of whom 50% hold a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated above average for Category IIA institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 12; average business class size is 14.

Library
The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 188,256 volumes (including e-books), 501 microform items, and 3177 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 464 periodicals. Students have access to such databases and networks as Expanded Academic ASAP, Lexis/Nexis, Academic Universe, EBSCO Business Source Complete, S&P’s NetAdvantage, Hoovers, Mintel Marketing Reports, Emerald Management Xtra, ValueLine Investment Survey, Euromonitor Global market Information, Wall Street Journal Online, Regional Business News, VAULT Career Library. Other opportunities for research consist of library instruction specfic to numerous specialized business areas and courses.
Computers
Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of approximately 600 computers dedicated to student computing in labs, classrooms, apartments, dorms, campus center, and library. Two 24-hour labs are also available.
Career and Job Placement
Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time. Placement services for alumni include assistance with the mechanics of finding a job (resume development, interview technique, industry/company research) and career manger for adult students. Placement is available through the university placement office.
International Students
International students must take the TOEFL. International students must score 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT) or 79 on the Internet-Based (iBT) version. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover 1 year of study. There is a processing fee, of $10 for 7 to 11 hours or $40 for 12 or more hours and an international fee of $50. The application deadline for fall entry is June 1.
Calendar
The school operates on a term basis. Trimesters are 14 weeks long; summer sessions, 14 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the day and evening.
Saint Edward's University, School of Management and Business Admissions
A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 2.75, a GMAT score of 500 (mba in Digital media management), and GRE scores of 1000. Most important admissions factors are grades in upper-level courses, GMAT results, and essays. A strong mathematics background is not required.
The number of applicants for the 2006-2007 class was 254; 192 were accepted; 160 enrolled. Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited by attendance at graduate fairs at schools with a high percentage of minority students and through support of organizations like NSHMBA and the Black MBA Association.
Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer (fall only for mba Digital Media management; fall and spring ony for MSOLE). To apply, students must submit an application form, transcripts from all schools attended, GMAT scores, or GRE, a nonrefundable application fee of $45, an essay, and a current resume. The application deadlines are July 1 for fall entry; November 1, spring; March 1, summer. Students are notified on a rolling basis of the admissions decision. The latest acceptable test date for fall entry is July. Once accepted, students may defer admission for 1 calendar year.
Saint Edward's University, School of Management and Business Financial Aid
About 54% of graduate business school students receive financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships, for a total average of $14,659 annually; maximum $21,882. The FAFSA is required. The application deadline is open for fall entry.
Tuition for all students is $649 per credit, or $7788 per year. On-campus room and board costs approximately $9340; books and supplies, $500; personal expenses, $4254, for an estimated annual total of $21,882. Graduate student housing is available in student dormitories and student apartment complexes on campus.
Saint Edward's University, School of Management and Business Students
Eleven percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time; 98% have had an average of 9 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from Texas (95%). Fifty-one percent are women, 29% are minorities, and 4% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 21; ages range from 21 to 56. Two percent enter directly from undergraduate school; 5% already have a graduate degree. About 5% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons. In 2006, 206 graduate business degrees were awarded.
