University of Dallas, founded in 1956, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The 1000-acre campus is located in an urban area 10 miles northwest of Dallas. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is approximately 3000. The College of Business, Graduate School of Management was founded in 1966 and is located on the main campus. Courses also are offered at Fort Worth, Plano, and Southlake (Solana). The basic educational approach is to prepare students to become competent, responsible practitioners in the profession of management. GSM does not emphasize theoretical courses; it offers a highly pragmatic program that focuses on the practical realities of managerial life.

The GSM offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Management (MM), and Master of Science (MS) as well as a joint degree in science (MBA/MS). Other programs include a 4-1 program (MBA/BA) with the University of Dallas Constantine College, graduate assistantships, internships, and foreign exchange with France and Spain. The strongest areas of study are corporate finance, information assurance, and marketing. The most popular course is Security Analysis—Project Management Courses. Regular programs bring distinguished speakers and visiting professors to campus. The Management Lecture Series is a mandatory course that brings speakers to campus to address ethical issues and business trends.

Forty-nine total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 5 elective credits. Required courses include:

The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 1<1/2> years; maximum, 6 years. For students attending part time, the minimum is 2 years; maximum, 6 years.

In a recent year, there were 25 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 84% held a doctorate; there were 121 part-time faculty, of whom 19% held a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated below average for Category IIA institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 3; average business class size is 19.

Library

The William A. Blakley Library houses a collection of more than 245,400 volumes, 75,000 microform items, and 1900 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 700 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in economics and finance. Students have access to such databases and networks as Dialog, ABI/INFORM, Compact Disclosure, OCLC, Faulkner’s Communication Infodisk, Computer Select, National Trade Database, and others. Other opportunities for research consist of InterLibrary Loan and Tex Share Card.

Computers

Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The business school has its own computer facilities, consisting of 75 terminals and microcomputers and software that includes Excel, Powerpoint, Access, WordPerfect, and SPSS. The facilities are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Career and Job Placement

In a recent year, 12 companies recruited on campus. Forty percent were national corporations. Majors most in demand were finance and marketing. Average starting salary of the graduating class was $35,000; range was $30,000 to $40,000. The percentage of graduates finding jobs were:

  • regional corporations 35%
  • local small enterprises 20%
  • national corporations 15%
  • local large enterprises 10%
  • self-employment 5%

Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, but those available to alumni include those available to students. Placement is available through GSM Career Management Office and the university placement office.

International Students

International students must take the Papewr-Based TOEFL or take the IELTS. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover 1 year of study. Check with the school for current insurance fees. Financial aid is available for these students and consists of graduate assistantships, available by application after completion of the first semester of study with a GPA of 3.5. The application deadline for fall entry is July 1.

Calendar

The school operates on a trimester basis. Trimesters are 13 weeks long; summer sessions, 13 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only and weekends.

A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0 and a GMAT score of 500. Most important admissions factors are academic accomplishments and ability, work experience, and GMAT results. A strong mathematics background is not required.

The number of applicants for a recent class was 2000; 1100 were accepted; 900 enrolled. The average GPA was 3.1; average GMAT score was 550. Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited by through conventions targeted toward minorities and active involvement in African American and Hispanic graduate and professional organizations.

Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $50, 2 letters of recommendation, and a resume. The application deadline is open. Students are notified 2 weeks after the complete application is received of the admissions decision. The latest acceptable test date for fall entry is the second week in August. Once accepted, students may defer admission for 1 year.

In a recent year, about 28% of graduate business school students received financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships, for a total maximum of $19,500. The FAFSA is required. The application deadlines are July 1 for fall entry; December 1, spring.

Tuition for all students is $505 per credit. Books and supplies cost approximately $1250; personal expenses, $5000; and other fees, $1000. Graduate student housing consists of university-owned apartment housing. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.

Sixteen percent of a recent graduate business school class were enrolled full time; 85% had an average of 7 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students were from Texas (68%). Forty-one percent were women, 28% were minorities, and 22% were foreign nationals. The average age at entrance was 34; ages ranged from 21 to 61. Twenty-one percent entered directly from undergraduate school; 10% already have a graduate degree. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 40%, business; 19%, engineering; 16%, math and science; 10%, liberal arts; 8%, social sciences; and 7%, economics. About 13% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons; 64% remain to receive their degree. In a recent year, 405 graduate business degrees were awarded.
