University of Houston-Victoria, School of Business Administration History
University of Houston/Victoria, founded in 1973, is a public, coeducational institution. The 17-acre campus is located in a small town. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 2632.
The School of Business Administration was founded in 1973 and is located on the main campus. The basic educational approach is to offer an integrated curriculum that blends theoretical concepts with practical applications.
University of Houston-Victoria, School of Business Administration Academics
The School of Business Administration offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship (MS-EDE), and Global Master of Business Administration (G-MBA). The most popular courses are in leadership, advertising, investments, and other electives in marketing and finance.
Forty-eight total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 12 elective credits. Required courses include:

Students in the Global MBA degree program, may receive waiver credit for up to 30 semester hours based on the completion of applicable coursework less than 5 years old with grades of B or better.
The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 2/3 years; maximum, 7 years. For students attending part time, the minimum is 3 years; maximum, 7 years.
There are 28 total full-time graduate business faculty, all of whom hold a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated above average for Category llA institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 8; average business class size is 23.
University of Houston-Victoria, School of Business Administration Unique Programs
Library
The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 251,056 volumes, 528,953 microform items, and 9498 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 10,695 periodicals. Students have access to such databases and networks as Accounting & Tax (ProQuest), Business & Company Resource Center, Business Source Premier, CCH Tax, FIS, Company Data Direct, and others. Other opportunities for research consist of interlibrary loans, on-line databases, electronic reserve, and remote access.
Computers
Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. Available computer facilities consist of networked PCs and Macs. Software includes various word processing, statistical, and spreadsheet packages.
Career and Job Placement
The majors most in demand by companies recruiting in 2006 was accounting. Average starting salary of the graduating class was $55,600; range was $30,000 to $60,000. The percentage of graduates finding jobs were:
- national corporations 30%
- regional corporations 30%
- local large enterprises 25%
- local small enterprises 10%
- self-employment 5%
Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time. Placement services for alumni include placement files, job fairs, and an employment database. Placement is available through the university placement office. Eighty percent of the most recent graduating class found jobs within three months of receiving their degree.
International Students
International students must score 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT) or 79 on the Internet-Based (iBT) version. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health consisting of a university health form, and proof of adequate funds to cover the entire period of study. Financial aid is available for these students. The application deadline for fall entry is June 1.
Calendar
The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 8 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only and on-line.
University of Houston-Victoria, School of Business Administration Admissions
A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 2.5 and a GMAT score of 450. The formula for using the GPA and GMAT scores is (200 x GPA) + 2 x (sum of verbal and quantitative). Most important admissions factors are grades in upper-level courses, GMAT results, and academic accomplishments and ability. A strong mathematics background is required.
The number of applicants for the 2006-2007 class was 271; 242 were accepted; 198 enrolled. The average GPA was 3.45; average GMAT score was 479. Transfers are accepted.
Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, and GMAT scores. The application deadlines are June 1 for fall entry; October 1, spring; March 1, summer. Students are notified of the admissions decision when the file is complete. The latest acceptable test date for fall entry is July 1. Once accepted, students may defer admission .
University of Houston-Victoria, School of Business Administration Financial Aid
The school’s own financial statement is required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.
Tuition for in-state residents is $4224 per year. Nonresidence pay $9624 per year. Books and supplies cost approximately $1000; personal expenses, $6600; and other fees, $2118, for an estimated annual total of $13,942 for in-state residents and $19,342 for out-of-state residents. Graduate student housing is not available on campus. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.
University of Houston-Victoria, School of Business Administration Students
Twenty-three percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time; 75% have had an average of 2 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school. The greatest percentage of students are from Texas (97%). Fifty percent are women, 62% are minorities, and 19% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 33; ages range from 22 to 61. Eleven percent enter directly from undergraduate school; 3% already have a graduate degree. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 55%, business; 32%, engineering; 4%, education, law, and medicine; 3%, liberal arts; 3%, math and science; 3%, social sciences; and 1%, economics. About 41% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons; 54% remain to receive their degree. In 2006, 130 graduate business degrees were awarded.
