The American Society of Travel Agents is the worlds largest association of travel agents and professionals. They work with travel agents and the companies they serve such as cruise lines, tour guide companies, hotels, air lines, car rentals, and more. Their mission is to sell travel accommodations and provide travel opportunities through knowledge, representation of various companies, and professionalism. They also work to make sure those working in travel fields will continue to work in a field that is growing profitably and providing rewarding opportunities for everyone who is associated with it.

The society was founded in 1931 as the American Steamship and Tourist Agents’ Association. They work with members in 140 different countries to create the most influential travel association in the world. The ASTA is constantly growing and improving their force by adding new travel companies to their association and working together to discover new ways to improve the overall travel experience.

Scholarships Offered By the American Society of Travel Agents

The ASTA Arizona Undergraduate Scholarship is for students who are enrolled in an accredited college or university in the state of Arizona. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and be entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate study of a tourist related program. 60 credit hours of a four year school must be completed during the time in which the scholarship is used. In order to apply, applicants must have a copy of their driver’s license or state identification card, resume, two recommendation letters from academic or professionally related individuals, a transcript copy, and a two-page original essay. The scholarship is for $2,000 and covers tuition, books and other educational fees. Scholarships must be submitted by April of the year in which the scholarship will be awarded.

The Northern California Chapter Richard Epping Scholarship is available for students who are residents of northern California or northern Nevada and attending school in the same area. The scholarship is awarded for the last year of a student’s schooling, and high school students are not considered for this scholarship. Students applying for this scholarship must have at least a 2.5 grade point average and be studying in a field related to travel or tourism. Applicants must submit a 500-word essay on their desire to obtain a career involving travel or tourism. They must also submit an application form, transcript, and reference page. Applications can be found on the American Society of Travel Agents website. This scholarship is awarded annually to one applicant in the amount of $2,000.

The Stan and Leone Pollard Scholarship is for those who are re-entering the job market and attending a travel school or junior college to focus on travel and tourism studies. This is available to all U.S. citizens taking travel or tourism courses. It does not apply to high school students. To apply, students must fill out an application form on the society website and submit an essay, copies of transcripts, and professional or academic references. Two awards are given out annually to applicants in the amount of $2,000 each.

The Joseph R. Stone Scholarship is for high school seniors or college students in an undergraduate program related to travel or tourism. Applicants must also have a parent in the field who can provide proof of employment. Requirements for the scholarship include writing a 500 word essay on career goals in the travel industry, having a parent currently working in the industry, and at least a 2.5 grade point average. A total of three awards are given out annually to applicants in the amount of $2,400 each.

The A.L. Simmons Fund is for graduate students working toward a master’s or doctoral degree in a travel or tourism field. It is available to all U.S. citizens who have at least a 2.5 grade point average and have submitted a paper on the field they are studying in. High school students are not eligible for this scholarship. Application forms are available on the ASTA website. The awarded is given annually to two applicants in the amount of $2,000 each.

Things to Consider About the American Society of Travel Agents Scholarships

Many scholarships offered by this society are strictly for those who are well into their education in the travel or tourism field. It is important to look closely as to whether a scholarship is for high school students or strictly those in the midst of completing an undergraduate or graduate program. Most scholarships also require an essay to be written regarding an applicant’s career goals and outlook regarding their education.
