Generally speaking, engineering can be explained as the functional use of mathematics to decipher a range of practical problems. Engineering degrees can offer professionals with a high earning potential since engineers are so widely sought after. There are many branches of engineering and each one has its own requirements, job options, and skills sets.

Types of Engineering Degrees


There are several different types of engineering degrees available. Students usually start out with a Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering in the field and many go on to receive their master’s degree as well. In fact, engineering itself can be broken down into a range of specialized areas. Those areas can include, but are not limited to:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Systems engineering
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Aeronautical engineering
  • Environmental engineering
  • Architectural engineering
  • Computer engineering
  • Agricultural engineering


A lot of the engineering degrees that are awarded are mechanical engineering degrees. These types of engineers study mechanics, fluids, materials, thermal properties, and controls. Mechanical engineers design and construct machines that work on mechanical principles instead of electronic principles.

Civil engineering degrees are also very popular. This field centers on designing and building structures such as tunnels, sewer systems, roads, and buildings. There are also specialized areas within this field as well which include transportation, environmental, geotechnical, construction, and structural engineering.

Chemical engineering programs focus on chemistry, biology, math, and physics. The degree program combines engineering with molecular science. Graduates from this type of degree program tend to work in alternative energy sources, advanced materials, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology.

Engineering Degree Requirements


The requirements for earning an engineering degree depend upon the type of engineering degree program that you are enrolled in, as well as the specialized area of engineering that you are focusing on.

A Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree usually takes around 4 years to complete. However, for some programs it might take longer. A degree in aeronautical engineering, for instance, can take 5 or more years to complete. Some programs expect their students to complete trainings or internships which will give them hands on experience in the field. This is not only useful information that can be applied in the “real world” but can also prepare them for positions outside the world of academia.

There are some schools that offer accelerated programs for students with B.S. engineering degrees who desire to earn a doctoral degree in engineering. An accelerated program lets students go straight from an undergraduate degree to a doctoral degree without actually earning an M.S. degree in the middle. An accelerated program can also allow a student to graduate with a B.S. degree in a shorter amount of time as well.

It is generally expected that students will maintain good grade point averages (GPAs) while enrolled in an engineering program. In addition to the core courses that they are required to take as part of their major, they might also have to take general education classes as required by their institutions. These classes could consist of English, Health, Physical Education, Humanities, and Science as determined by the school itself.
