Computer Science Degree Requirements

If you are interested in earning your bachelor’s degree in computer science, you will be required to submit your SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) score, and if you are a mature student, you may be required to upgrade your courses before being admitted to a degree program. Non-English speaking students are required to take a Test of English as a Foreign Language before admission to any degree program in the US. If you would like to earn your master’s degree in computer science, you will first need to have a bachelor’s degree.

When you are working toward your bachelor’s degree in computer science, there will be many classes that you will be required to take. Most programs require that students complete a total of 130 semester hours, and in addition to the classes directly related to your major, there are other classes that you will be required to take, including some basic fundamental classes, usually 24 semester hours in total. These classes include English Composition, Mathematics, Sciences (usually two courses, with one having a lab requirement), Social and Behavioral Sciences (at least two disciplines) and Arts and Humanities. Students are also required to have 26 hours of General Education requirements, which may include Global Issues, Learning Strategies, Speech Communication and Applied Calculus.

You will also be required to take prerequisite competencies, as well as university electives and of course, your core classes. Some of these classes include: Introduction to Computer Science and Object-Oriented Programming, Principles of Computer Organization, Principles of Computer Languages, Principles of Operating Systems, Principles of Computer Networks and Information Systems Architecture and Technology, just to name a few.
