Introduction

Founded in 1946 as Maryland’s first community college, Hagerstown Community College, or HCC, is a two-year public academic institution located in Hagerstown. The quaint, 319-acre campus is home to more than a dozen buildings, featuring a full-service business incubator, several gardens, and an outdoor amphitheater. HCC is recognized regionally for its Technical Innovation Center, including BSL2 laboratories for grants, life-science firms, and other business development support for technology-based entrepreneurs.

Academics

Hagerstown is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the American Association of Community Colleges. The school offers associate degrees and certificates in diverse areas of study, such as arts, biology, biotechnology, business, chemistry, computer science, dental assisting, and economics. HCC is composed of the following academic divisions: Business; Developmental Education and Adult Literacy Services; English and Humanities; Health Sciences; Mathematics and Science; Nursing; Physical Education and Leisure Studies; Technology and Computer Studies; and Truck Driver Training.

Continuing education forms an important part of HCC. The school offers non-credit classes that focus on skill-building, lifelong learning, and professional development. Some of the non-credit courses are adult education, alternative energy, animal care and veterinary office careers, licensing and professional career education, business and professional development, computers, healthy living, languages, lifelong learning, nursing and allied health, industrial technology and trades, and transportation and driver education.

HCC is home of the Washington County Adult Education Program. The mission of the program is to present adult learners with basic life skills, such as writing, reading, and mathematics to improve their participation as community members, be successful in the workforce, and increase the opportunity to further their education beyond the high school level. The credit and non-credit classes include adult basic education (ABE), English as a second language (ESL), developmental mathematics, external diploma program (EDP), and general educational development (GED).

HCC Online

Hagerstown offers online courses to help further the education the education of students unable to balance a traditional classroom schedule. Some of the online courses offered at HCC are principles of accounting I; human biology; introductory college chemistry; macroeconomic principles; marketing; phlebotomy; and principles of CT imaging.

Admissions

First-time students seeking admission to HCC must send their completed application form along with SAT/ACT score and official transcripts. Students seeking a transfer to the school must send a completed application form along with official transcripts from all previously attended institutes. International students are encouraged to apply for admission. Applicants from non-English speaking countries must take the TOEFL test to provide a proof of their proficiency in the English language.

Financial Aid

Hagerstown offers financial aid to deserving students to help them meet their educational expenses. Loans must be repaid with interest. Students can choose subsidized or unsubsidized loans to pay for college. Hagerstown also offers work-study programs to enable students to pay for some of their college expenses. Apart from helping students cover costs, these programs also help students gain work experience in their relevant field of interest.

Students

The HCC campus hosts a variety of events and activities to foster the overall development and growth of students. The Student Government Association (SGA) is the medium for involvement in the college, and it acts as the official student representative body. SGA serves as the voice of the student body on issues relating to campus life and participates in designing policies and student regulations.

The campus is home to several student clubs and organizations representing diverse interests. Some of the registered student organizations are the Art and Design Club, Anime Club, Association of Nursing Students (ANS), Black Student Union (BSU), Cheer Squad, Campus Ministries, English Club, Future Educators Club, Graphic Design Club, Information Tech Association, International Club, National Organization for Women (NOW), Outdoor Adventure Club, Robinwood Players Theater Club, Science Club, S.O.L.O (Supporting Our Little Ones), and Students for Creative Anachronism (SCA).

Athletics

HCC’s athletic department sponsors fourteen intercollegiate sports. The college is a member of the Maryland Junior College Conference (JUCO) as well as a member of Region XX of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The campus is home to the Athletic, Recreation, and Community Center (ARCC), which is open to the community more than 80 hours per week.

Additional School Information

Hagerstown provides special services to students with documented disabilities. The staff provides reasonable accommodation to students in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and its amendments. Although HCC does not have any special education programs for individuals with disabilities, the Disability Services Office coordinates the condition of reasonable accommodations, which are decided on an individual basis. These services may include having tests read aloud to students, taking notes for students, creating lecture outlines, extended testing times, and use of interpreters.

The Academic Testing Center at HCC supports the personal and professional educational goals of all students, faculty, and community members by providing a secure, safe, and favorable environment for the supervision of tests. It assures proper course placement for students seeking a degree or certificate, or attempting their first college-level English or mathematics course, and provides national testing for qualified individuals.
