Southern Western BOCES-Practical Nursing Program is for individuals who are ready to have a very successful and rewarding career in the field of nursing. The Southern Westchester BOCES’ mission is to work together with communities, agencies and districts in order to meet their learning challenges by simply making available, affordable top notch services and regional leadership. Practical Nursing Program’s mission is to serve the community by simply training nurses who are totally committed to offering expert care through efficient application of the nursing practice in an ethical, caring and holistic way.The Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program’s faculty and support staff strives to encourage a sense of expert responsibility as a part of the nursing profession and seek to also build in their students, a dedication to life-long thirst for knowledge and professional growth.

The Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program’s goal is to offer adult students with a rock-solid base in nursing science in these three domains:Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor. Successful students will be adequately prepared to sit for the New York State licensure examination and to also practice – under the supervision of Registered Nurses or Physicians – as entry-level Licensed Practical Nurses within various health care settings and this includes Community Health, Acute Care, Sub-Acute Care and Long Term Care.

Academics

The Southern Westchester BOCES School is located in Elmsford, New York. The Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program strongly encourages academic freedom; they encourage the freedom of their students to seek knowledge without unnecessary interference. Prospective students should take note that academic freedom simply entails the liberty to take on the whole processes involved in seeking for knowledge in regard to the Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program.

Students should also note that there are limits to academic freedom. Students should take care to steer clear of controversial issues that are not even related to nursing.

Program Overview

The Practical Nursing Program is quite an intensive training program that consists of 8 units of study and 3 clinical shifts. The program’s full length is 1080 hours, which has about 70 percent theory and lab skills and 30 percent clinical experience.

The following are the Practical Nursing Program’s units of study and the approximated hours of instruction/laboratory in every unit:

  • 100 hours – Fundamentals of Nursing
  • 75 hours – Body Structure & Function
  • 40 hours – Pharmacology/Calculation of Medications
  • Students MUST PASS the aforementioned courses and must also obtain passing grades in all the Medical Surgical Nursing Units.

    School Schedule

    The Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program’s calendar contains full information in regards to every vacation and holiday period.

    Day Program – The class hours are Mondays-Fridays, from 8:30am to 2:30pm. There may be a variation in the clinical schedules. In addition to this, seminars on a variety of topics may be offered from 2:30pm to 5:00pm. Students must attend some of the seminars because some are compulsory.

    Evening Program – The class hours are Mondays-Thursdays, from 5:30pm to 9:30pm. Clinical schedules will also include Saturdays, 8am to 2:30pm. Students can offer a variety of topics outside class hours. A couple of seminars must be attended.

    Students are free to use the school computers for program related work and research – that is, when the computer room is not being used by a class.

    Students are advised to take advantage of the services provided by the Practical Nursing Program’s counselor for help with all issues, including social, health and psychological issues as well.

    Accreditation

    Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program is accredited by the Board of Regents, University of the State of New York and the New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions.

    Licensed Practical Nursing Preparation Course

    Students will need to pass the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) entrance examinations in order to get accepted into the Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program. Students are advised to boost their mathematical, reading, critical thinking, writing and exam taking skills in order to cope with this 54 hour course.

    Students who are planning to take the Practical Nursing course must sit for the Practical Nursing entrance test soon after the end of the course.

    Students are not guaranteed admission into Southern Westchester BOCES’ Practical Nursing Program by simply taking the Practical Nursing Preparatory course.

    Admissions

    Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program does not offer admission to students with advanced standing or to transfer students.

    In order to get accepted into Southern Western BOCES-Practical Nursing Program, the following will be required of prospective applicants:

  • Applicants should submit a completed application form with the required fee
  • 2 completed references which must be submitted along with the application form
  • Applicants should have “acceptable scores” on the Practical Nursing entrance test – scoring above the 50th percentile is what is considered as an acceptable score
  • Applicants should successfully complete the interview process
  • Applicants must have a high school certificate or a diploma that is state-approved. Applicants who are graduating from high schools outside the United States must present certified documents and that the documents that they submitted are equivalent to a United States’ earned high school certificate. Southern Westchester BOCES does not accept a lot of High School Diplomas from distance learning or online based schools
  • Final Admission

    Applicants will receive a letter of acceptance when they meet all the requirements for admission into Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program. When an applicant receives a notification, he or she must do the following:

  • Submit evidence of a full physical examination, this includes required vaccination and titers. The applicant is responsible for the stabilization of his or her existing physical condition and must correct the situation before enrollment into the program
  • NOTE: Any student who is or gets pregnant and desires to carry on in the program, the student will be required to present a letter from her doctor authorizing full classroom/clinical activities or listing restrictions (if any). Southern Westchester BOCES reserves the right to decide if the restrictions will hinder the ability of the student to continue in the program. Students should also note that absences from class due to pregnancy and delivery will also be considered as normal absences.

    Students must make a non-refundable tuition fee deposit, as outlined in their letter of acceptance.

    Financial Aid

    Southern Westchester BOCES understands that investing in a quality Practical Nursing training program is a concern to some students, that is why the Practical Nursing Program has put in place, a comprehensive financial aid program. The financial aid program is available to help qualified students meet financial needs.

    The nursing program’s financial aid officers assist students in completing the FREE financial aid application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and also assist them in reviewing the Student Aid Report (SAR).

    In addition to this, students are assisted in completing their loan application to the New York State Higher Education Services Education. 010641 is the Southern Westchester BOCES school code.

    Grants

    The Federal Pell Grants These grants are made available to eligible Practical Nursing students who have not completed their bachelor’s degree. Day students who have successfully completed 900 hours of the PN program may also qualify for an additional Pell Grant.

    Federal Stafford Loan Subsidized and unsubsidized loans are available to students who are eligible to receive them. In order to be considered “eligible” to receive financial aid from the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, the student have to:

  • Be enrolled into a course that would lead to earning a certificate, diploma or degree
  • Be a New York State resident for one year (12 months) prior to applying for financial aid
  • Be a United States’ citizen or must be a qualified non-citizen
  • Be enrolled into the Practical Nursing Program full-time
  • Must act in accordance with selective service requirements
  • Must sustain satisfactory academic progress
  • Should not be found defaulting on Federal Title IV loan(s) or owing a Federal Tile IV grant refund
  • The United States Department of Education randomly chooses students for verification of income. Students who are notified by the Financial Aid Officer of their selection for verification of their income should fill out the necessary forms before the second week of school. The students who fail to supply their income verification will become unqualified for financial aid. The Financial Aid Officer will send written notification to students, notifying them of changes in their loan status resulting from verification of income.

    Other financial assistance resources include; Veterans Benefits, Office of Workforce Investments, Vocational and Educational Services to Individuals with Disabilities (VESID), and Employers/Labour Organizations.

    Students

    A large number of the students who are admitted into the Southern Westchester BOCES-Practical Nursing Program are 40 years old and older, and a large number of students attend part time classes.

    Southern Westchester BOCES School does not offer its students campus housing. Elmsford also offers really good access to public transportation. The village of Elmsford offers a really good supply of nice and comfy apartments. But, the real estate taxes for each home are a little higher in Elmsford than in a lot of places in the state of New York.

    Southern Westchester BOCES School also does not offer their students a meal plan as well.
