Blackhawk Technical College Academics
Blackhawk Technical College, also known as Blackhawk Tech or BTC, offers close to 50 programs that can help students obtain an associate’s degree, certificate or diploma. The school also offers apprenticeship programs helping students who want to learn a trade such as plumbing or carpentry.
Associate degree programs in the school include accounting, early childhood education and marketing. Programs are awarded with a completion of 64 semester hours of course work, 32 of which are focused on a student’s major area of instruction.
The Culinary Arts program at Blackhawk prepares students in the field of food service. Students in the program receive hands-on training in a professional kitchen on campus. A seven-week externship is awarded to students for more training in a different setting. Students may also enter contests at the local and state levels to test abilities. The program is accredited by the American Culinary Federation Accrediting Commission.
The diploma programs at Blackhawk are designed for more extensive training in a wide range of fields including dental assisting, farm business and green industry technology. The programs vary by semester and the school offers less than one year, one year and two year diplomas.
Certificate Programs at Blackhawk include web analyst programmers, phlebotomy, and supply chain management. The customer service program is offered as a 16 credit program that includes the skills necessary to be successful in serving customer’s needs. Topics covered include customer retention, business skills and communications.
Acceptance to the Apprenticeship Program requires students to select a trade or occupation, apply to the apprenticeship office and submit a high school or GED transcript.
Blackhawk Technical College Admissions
Blackhawk Technical College has an open-door policy when applying to the school. Admissions requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent and a completed application form which may be filled out online. Admissions for certain programs may vary and there is a helpful checklist on the school’s official website to determine requirements.
International students may apply to the school and are required to pay out-of-state tuition. Admission of foreign students to the school is based on program space availability.
Youth Options is Blackhawk’s high school program. Students may earn college credit while still in secondary school by meeting the following requirements:
- Must be enrolled in a public high school through 10th grade,
- no risk of disciplinary problems,
- must have good academic standing,
- must have written approval of parents or guardian, and
- must notify school district by required dates.
Blackhawk Technical College Financial Aid
BTC offers financial aid in the forms of grants, loans, scholarships and employment. State programs include the Wisconsin Higher Education Grant, the Indian Student Assistance Grant and a Nursing Student Loan. Aid may be provided for veterans through special military programs. There are many scholarships offered by the school as well including Private Donors and the BTC Foundation.
Blackhawk Technical College Students
Blackhawk Technical College was founded in 1968 as Blackhawk Technical Institute. The school is located in Janesville, Wisconsin and sits on 80 acres of wooded land. BTC has approximately 14,000 credit and non-credit students walk through its doors annually.
The school offers an Office of Multicultural Affairs that serves the needs of the minority students at BTC.
The school also harbors many student clubs and organizations within its walls including an Aviation Club, an Outdoor Club and a Veterans Club.
The school also offers a fitness center comprised of 16 pieces of modern equipment, two televisions and shower facilities. The center was made possible by the Student Government Association.
Janesville, Wisconsin is home to some 60,000 people and is known as the “City of Parks” for its 2,015 acre park system that includes 53 parks.

Blackhawk Technical College (commonly Blackhawk Tech) is a vocational college in Rock County, Wisconsin and a component of the Wisconsin Technical College System. Blackhawk Technical College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). The two primary counties in Wisconsin served by Blackhawk Technical College are Rock County, WI and Green County, WI. An adult education center is also open in downtown Beloit, plus Blackhawk Technical College has classrooms at the Rock County Job Center. These two schools have developed to form the nucleus of the present technical college system district which is now Blackhawk Technical College. In August, 1987, along with the other 15 state technical institutes, Blackhawk Technical Institute became Blackhawk Technical College.
