Introduction

United Technical Center (UTC) is located in Clarksburg, West Virginia and works to provide students with an outlet to better their lives and attain their personal and professional goals. The school specializes in vocational, career, and technical areas of interest and is open to students in high school as well as to adults wishing to advance their career or shift to a new career in one of UTC’s programs.

Academics

UTC approaches education and professional development with a combination of academic courses and practical hands-on training, thereby preparing students to immediately enter the workforce or attain a desired promotion. Students learn not only the practical aspects of particular jobs but also the importance of good work habits, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Basic academic courses are offered in algebra II, conceptual mathematics, applied geometry, trigonometry, and English. Specific areas of study are divided into disciplinary clusters.

Engineering and Technical Cluster

Engineering and technical programs of study comprise a majority of academic and career interests at UTC. Students can pursue certificates and degrees in the following areas:

  • Automotive Technology
  • Computer Systems and Hardware Support
  • Collision Repair Technology
  • Drafting
  • Electrical Technician
  • General Building Construction
  • Machine Tool Technology
  • Masonry
  • Welding Technology
  • Almost all of these areas of study are one to two-year programs in which students receive practical skills and hands-on training.

    Arts and Humanities Cluster

    Students interested in Graphic Communications (printing) will benefit immensely from this program. The program encompasses all major aspects of printing, such as copy preparation, computer layout and typesetting, plate making skills, press operation, and even sales and management skills.

    Health Science Education Cluster

    Several programs at the school cater to students with diverse educational backgrounds. The Practical Nursing program is geared toward post-secondary students who have an interest in bedside nursing care. Health Occupations Science Technology and Medical Assisting are intended for newcomers to the healthcare field, whether they are recent high school graduates are adults looking for a new career direction.

    Human Services

    The human services areas of study at UTC serve to prepare students for careers related to various interactive services. Students can complete certificate programs in Cosmetology, Emergency and Fire Management Services, and ProStart Restaurant Management.

    Admissions

    UTC has a Program Participation Agreement with the U.S. Department of Education to receive Pell Grants and other federal aid on behalf of all eligible students. Along with the standard curriculum, several student organizations work to educate and encourage teamwork outside of the classroom.

    SkillsUSA

    SkillsUSA is a national organization that brings students, instructors, and various industries together to foster a more cohesive, skilled workforce. UTC is one of several institutions in the United States with a chapter on campus. This chapter works to further the values and skills taught within the classroom in a fun, active environment.

    Health Occupations Students of America

    This organization provides a platform to promote professional opportunities in the healthcare field while also working to deliver quality healthcare to all. On UTC’s campus, organization members actively motivate and encourage the future healthcare professionals in America.

    National Technical Honor Society

    The National Technical Honor Society facilitates bringing technical students together and encourages development and improvement to better prepare them to achieve great things in the working world.
