Mississippi Scholarships and Financial Aid

Grants, Student Loans, & Fellowships

The Magnolia State has had a long history with integration and education. Today, it is home to 25 public universities and colleges and 10 private colleges. Each university has something to offer students. For example, Jackson State University is located in Jackson, Mississippi, the capital, business center, and metropolitan center of the state. The Mississippi Delta Community College is located in the center of the Mississippi Delta. The University of Mississippi is located in the small town of Oxford, Mississippi, home to William Faulkner, the American novelist. Wherever you choose to earn your post-secondary degree, you can find financial assistance to help you do it. Federal and Mississippi financial aid programs are there to help those who have financial need, and scholarships of all kinds are available to those who do not have enough funding.

Looking For Mississippi Scholarships and Financial Aid

When looking for Mississippi scholarships, keep in mind there are mainly four types of scholarships available to Mississippi students:

  • The U.S. Government offers grants and loans to students with financial need.
  • Mississippi offers state financial aid in the forms of grants, scholarships, loans, and stipends.
  • Individual Mississippi universities and colleges offer scholarships to students admitted to their institutions.
  • Other scholarships are available from Mississippi professional organizations and businesses.

Grants and Loans from the U.S. Government for Mississippi Students

Students with financial need, or students who believe they have financial need, can submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid to receive offers of federal financial aid. FAFSA applications are available on January 1, the year prior to the year in which you will need the aid. The national deadline for the FAFSA is June 30 the year in which you need the aid. Mississippi doesn’t have a state deadline for the FAFSA, but it does have deadlines for specific scholarships and grants. If you are applying for the MTAG and MESG Grant (see below), you should submit your application by September 15, and if you are applying for the HELP Scholarship you should submit your FAFSA application by March 31. Your school may have a priority deadline for all other federal aid programs. Check with your financial aid/scholarship office to be sure you don’t miss the deadline.

Three Things to Remember When Searching for Mississippi Scholarships and Financial Aid

  • Because Mississippi doesn’t have a state deadline for the FAFSA, make sure you are aware of individual university and college deadlines and FAFSA deadlines for specific programs.
  • Mississippi provides many graduate and teaching scholarships for students who want to be teachers, doctors, or nurses. Make sure you read them carefully to see if you qualify.
  • If you still need more aid after looking into federal, state, and individual university and college scholarships, then you may want to look into outside scholarships. Look locally first before seeking national or state-wide scholarships.
