As the world’s largest collegiate honor society, Golden Key International Honour Society recognizes its members by rewarding them for their academic achievements, leadership, and service. The Society dates back to 1977 when it was established by a group of faculty members and undergraduate students at Georgia State University. Since then the Society has grown to be the world’s premier honor society with over 2 million members and 375 chapters at colleges and universities located in eight countries. Those countries include the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Africa, The Bahamas, and Malaysia.

As a nonprofit organization, the Society is a great starting point for students to establish professional and social contacts. Members have the chance to be connected with a variety of career opportunities, community service programs, and campus activities. These opportunities are stepping stones for leadership development as well as personal growth. Its mission is to allow each member to realize its greatest potential and take that potential to the next level.

In addition, the Society is committed to the giving its members recognition through its scholarship and awards program. Every year a number of scholarships and awards are awarded to qualifying members. This article focuses on the variety of scholarships and awards offered by the Society.

Scholarships Offered by Golden Key International Honour Society

The following is a listing of scholarships and grants administered by the Society’s headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Most scholarships require an application form with all information filled out in English. Each award has a designated deadline which cannot and will not be extended under any circumstance. Here are the lists of scholarships and awards:

Chapter Service Awards: This award is designed for university chapters and alumni chapters conducting service projects focusing on education that are looking for financial support. Ten $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually. To be considered, applicants must submit a statement describing the service project in 500 words or less; and attach two letters of recommendation—one from the applicant’s Golden Key chapter advisor, and the other from a representative of the service, if possible. All materials should be sent via email to awards@goldenkey.org.

GEICO Life Scholarship: Ten $1,000 scholarships are awarded to members who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements while balancing other commitments such as family and a career. This scholarship is offered to undergraduate student members who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree. To be considered, applicants must submit a 500-word essay, an application, a letter of recommendation, and an official transcript. All materials must be received by the deadline in April. Documents can be faxed to (615) 627-9685, or students from the U.S or Canada can mail documents directly to: International Scholarship and Tuition Services, c/o Golden Key Scholarships/Awards, P.O. Golden Key Math Scholarship: This award offers two $1,000 scholarships to student members who excel in mathematics. Undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate members are eligible as long as they are enrolled in a degree program. Recipients are selected based on academic achievements as well as the quality of report submitted. To be considered, student members must fill out and submit a scholarship application, a math report/paper, a letter of recommendation, and an official transcript. ProWorld Study Abroad Scholarships: ProWorld offers ten student members the opportunity to receive a $1,000 scholarship to study abroad. To be considered, student members must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited four-year institution and be accepted to a ProWorld semester program. Applications can be downloaded from the website. Deadline for this scholarship varies.

Study Abroad Scholarships: This scholarship is designed to financially assist student members interested in studying abroad. A minimum of ten $1,000 scholarships are awarded to undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate students who are enrolled in a study abroad program. To be considered, students must fill out and submit a scholarship application; submit a statement describing the academic program at the institution abroad; a short statement explaining the importance of this program to your degree; proof of enrollment in this program; and an official transcript. FORD Engineering Scholarship: This award is given to U.S. members enrolled in a degree-granting engineering program. Two awards are offered to undergraduate students and two are awarded to graduate students. Each scholarship awards $10,000. To be considered, student members must fill out and submit a scholarship application, an engineering project/paper; resume; a letter of recommendation; and, an official transcript. FORD Business Scholarship: This scholarship recognizes two undergraduate and two graduate students who excel in a degree-granting business program. Scholarship awards $10,000 to each recipient. International Education Programs (IEP) Scholarships: IEP offers these scholarships especially to Golden Key members enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited four-year institution. Ten $1,000 scholarships are offered. Members from the United States, Australia, and Canada are only eligible for this award. A scholarship application is downloadable from the Golden Key website. Deadline for this scholarship varies.

Golden Key Research Grant: This grant is awarded to student members who are enrolled in a degree-granting program. Students can be undergraduates, graduates, or post-graduates to apply. A minimum of ten $1,000 scholarships are provided to financially support students with their research project. To be considered, student members must fill out and submit an application, an official transcript, a description of their research proposal, and a budget that summarizes the total cost for attending the conference, or how the grant money will be used for their research project. There are two deadlines for this award—one in October, and another in April.

Things to Keep in Mind about Golden Key International Honour Society

Students interested in joining the Golden Key International Honour Society can do so by invitation only. In turn, all scholarships and awards are only offered to members of the Society.

The Society offers a professional development grant for the chapter advisor as well as several awards, such as a President’s Award, Student Leader of the Year Award, Advisor of the Year Award, and more. Details about requirements and eligibility can be found on their website.
