Introduction

Located 35 miles northwest of the historic city of Mobile, Alabama is Bay Minette, home of James A. Faulkner State Community College. Known for offering Alabama’s lowest college tuition, students can pursue training and certificate programs in several areas. Associate degrees are also awarded in several areas of study.

Academics

Faulkner College offers associate degrees in general studies, pre-medicine, pre-nursing and chemistry. The school also offers certifications in child development, event planning, pastry baking, and culinary arts. Popular courses of study are environmental science, music and English. The school also offers an Associate of Science in Pre-Architecture.

The Adult Education program was designed to help adults learn and acquire the skills they need in today’s changing environment. The program provides books and all other necessary materials the student needs in order to be successful. Courses utilize the “perspective” method, which has proven to be highly effective with adult learners. This style of teaching works to address only what the adult learner needs academically.

Unique Programs

The dual enrollment program allows eligible students to enroll in college classes along with their high school classes and to receive both high school and college credits. The Early College Enrollment Program allows high school juniors and seniors to receive college credits while completing high school. The students must declare a program of study in the technical/occupational field. This program is designed to increase the number of skilled workers in the state of Alabama.

Admissions

To be admitted, students must simply fill out an application for admission and return their high school transcripts to the college. Some programs, however, have specific requirements that must be met before a student can be admitted. For students who have received their diploma at an accredited high school, there is no minimum GPA required for admissions, nor is there a minimum test score for the ACT or SAT.

Students who are interested in transferring to Faulkner must submit transcripts from any colleges attended along with their application.

Financial Aid

Financial Aid is available in the forms of grants, scholarships, work study jobs, and student loans. The scholarship committee of the college awards scholarships to students who have a proven record of scholastic achievement and leadership. Scholarships are also awarded to those who excel in other areas such as cheerleading, athletics and in fine and performing arts such as music.

Students

On-campus housing is available for students. Each room in the residence halls have two bedrooms and a bathroom, full closet, internet and cable access. Special dorms are available for those students who may have special requirements.

Students are encouraged to become involved in campus-based organizations that offer events such as beach parties, music and drama productions, trips, athletic events and much more. Popular groups on campus include Elated Voices, Phi Beta Lambda, Phi Theta Kappa and the Sun Chief Sound.

The Student Government Association, also known as the SGA, is a vital part of every student’s life. All students enrolled automatically become a member of the SGA. The SGA is governed by a set of guidelines written by the students. The most important aspect of this organization is that it serves the students best interest by working on their behalf.
