Academics

TUI, or Trident University International, is a for-profit online institution of higher learning based out of Cypress, California. The university began as a branch campus of Touro College in New York. In 2007, after acquisition by Summit Partners, TUI was recognized as a separate institution. The university is fully accredited by the Western Association of Colleges and Schools and the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges.

Trident University International offers a relatively small selection of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs. These programs encompass the fields of business, health science, education and information systems.

Within the College of Business, students can pursue bachelor’s of science degrees in either business administration or human resource management. Both programs require the completion of a minimum 120 credit hours. The business administration program allow students to select from a number of areas of concentration, including finance, leadership, logistics and marketing.

TUI also offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program for those looking to become leaders in the business world. The MBA requires 44 credit hours, 32 of which are designated as core coursework. For those with an interest in the health care industry, TUI gives qualified graduate students the chance to earn a dual degree. The 64 credit program earns students the Master of Business Administration and the Master of Science in Health Sciences.

Students in the College of Information Systems can choose bachelor’s of science degrees in either computer science or information technology management. The computer science track lays a strong foundation in the fundamentals of modern computer technology, including hardware and software, networking, programming, security and web design.

Unique Programs

Military Programs

Trident University offers a variety of degrees that have been designed with the armed forces in mind. For students who plan on completing a leadership program at one of the military’s Command and Staff Colleges, TUI provides six specialized master’s degrees. These degrees range from disaster management to international health. Bachelor’s degree programs are also available for certain branches of the military.

TUI has partnered with the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) to bring greater opportunities to enlisted personnel and officers throughout the armed forces. An articulation agreement allows students earning their bachelor’s degree at DAU to transfer seamlessly into a master’s degree program at TUI.

Admissions

Prospective TUI students submit an online application, and TUI requests official high-school or college transcripts on the student’s behalf. Application is free, with the exception of the Ph.D. program. In general, applicants can expect a decision on their application within 24 business hours.

Graduate Admissions

Admission to the graduate programs at TUI requires a baccalaureate degree in an appropriate field. Applicants must have earned a 2.5 GPA or better throughout their undergraduate coursework. Students who have completed graduate level work at another institution may transfer up to 30 percent of the credits necessary for a TUI master’s or doctoral degree.

Military Admissions

The GO Army portal streamlines the application process for active duty or reserve army personnel. All branches of the military, however, are eligible for tuition discounts courtesy of TUI, over and above whatever aid the federal government bestows upon service members.

Financial Aid

Financial aid makes higher education possible for millions of students. At Trident University International, the first step in receiving financial aid is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The completed FAFSA will be used to produce a Student Aid Report. This report helps financial aid officers at TUI assemble aid packages for every student in need of assistance.

Grants

Grant money is usually awarded based on financial need. The money is a gift and does not have to be repaid. The most common sources of grant funding are Federal Pell Grants and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants. Neither of these grants may be applied to graduate school fees or tuition.

Loans

When need-based aid and scholarships fail to cover all education-related expenses, students can borrow from the federal government. Federal Direct Loans offer a competitive interest rate, generous repayment plans and a 6 to 9 month grace period upon graduating or leaving school.

Scholarships

While not offering any internal scholarships, TUI may honor gift funds that students have received from outside sources. The Student Resource Center also maintains a database of scholarship resources. Securing scholarship funds requires a time investment on the part of the student, but may well pay off in the long run.

Students

Roughly 8,000 students are enrolled in classes with TUI, half of them on a part-time basis. Only one-third of students are women, and nearly 90 percent qualify as non-traditional — 25 years of age or older. A significant number of TUI students are active-duty military or reserves, or government employees. The immense flexibility afforded by an online-only university makes TUI very attractive to those who may have to travel on short notice.

TUI provides information technology support, both online and over the phone, to students having trouble with the university’s platform or software. The support team is trained to help both experienced and novice computer users. The support homepage also contains multimedia presentations on all of TUI’s tools and programs.
