Introduction

One of the most popular two-year colleges in Kentucky, Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) serves an important need by offering open admissions, allowing nearly anyone to begin the path to an academic career or pertinent job training. As one of 16 two-year colleges that make up Kentucky’s Community and Technical College System, BSCTC sees students from all over the state on its four different campuses, which range from buildings located in Prestonburg to the Hager Hill Campus. The Mayo Campus in Paintsville is also now home to the Midway College School of Pharmacy, with all of the pertinent facilities needed to get students properly acclimated for the same sort of equipment and systems they will be seeing upon graduation when they enter the workforce. The school’s main campus in Prestonburg is where a majority of students attend classes.

Academics

There are a number of different programs spread out over the different campuses that make up college. Particular campuses can allow students the chance to specialize in their area of study and to actually focus on learning more about that subject because everyone else on-campus is in the same boat. For those who are interested in earning their AA or AS degrees, there are a few different choices. One can choose to work towards an AA/AS in General Education, an AAS in Human Services, or an AAS in Information Technology. For Students who are more interested in hands-on learning that involves a particular focus area, there are courses of study in a number of different occupations, including masonry, diesel technology, automotive technology, autobody repair, and even the new robotics and automation department.

Concentrations in the health department include a focus on Nursing, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Pharmacy, Respiratory Care, and Dental Hygiene.

Admissions

Admissions are non-competitive. For those first-time college students who are applying, it is important to submit a completed application form for admission and to include one’s GED or high school diploma, along with one’s official high school transcript. While certain programs might require a few different things, such as ACT or SAT scores or some sort of placement testing, many are rather open-ended. Students interested in attending should also be sure to have their materials in well before the semester they intend on beginning classes, and should indicate whether or not they plan on attending school full-time or part-time.

Students

With the focus on out-of-the-classroom learning opportunities as well as various different networks formed through extracurricular activities such as various clubs and organizations ranging from particular interests to the Student Government Association, life on-campus can feel a whole lot like life on campus at a more traditional type of university. Students can also take advantage of a well-equipped library for study and research opportunities, can petition to start their own club or organization if they have a particular idea for something, and can take advantage of the extensive student services opportunities available, where counselors assist in adjusting to college life while also providing helpful hints for ideal job hunting.
