Jefferson Community College

Introduction

Jefferson Community College (JCC) is a member of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. Chartered in the 1960s, JCC is located in Watertown and offers numerous two-year associate’s degrees and career certification programs for its students.

Students can take classes on campus with accomplished instructors or online with the distance learning program. The online courses are of the same high educational standard as on-campus courses. With distance learning, students are not required to relocate or give up a current job or career in order to secure an associate’s degree. The credits earned through the online program are easily transferred to a four-year institution for students who wish to continue toward achieving a bachelor’s degree.

Academics

Students are encouraged to transfer to four-year institutions and complete a bachelor’s degree after graduation. As such, this community college has structured its academic program to make credit transfer simple. Students will take only courses that are recognized by universities and four-year institutions across the nation. While at school, students will learn how to manage a college-level schedule, how to study for college exams, how to effectively complete college assignments, and how to successfully manage the transition from high school to college.

Many different associate’s degree programs are offered. Students can choose from associate’s degrees in accounting, early childhood education, criminal justice, tourism, nursing, mathematics, science and much more. Students who do not wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree but instead hope to directly enter the work force may wish to consider a career certification program. These programs provide students with the information and knowledge required to excel in a chosen career.

Admissions

The admissions process is made quite simple because of its affiliation with the State University of New York. Applications are most frequently completed online. However, a few other options are available for students. Students who wish to apply can download a PDF of the application online and mail it, request an application to be mailed to their place of residence, or visit the Office of Admission and fill out an application there.

The admission staff is ready and willing to answer any questions students may have about applying. The staff members will help students fill out all the appropriate information and greatly improve their chances of being accepted. While this school does not require an ACT score or SAT score for admittance, these tests are greatly recommended for applying students. These tests will help the academic advisors place students in classes which will improve a student’s chance of success.

After applying to the school, students will typically hear back within forty-eight hours. In some instances, additional testing may be required. These assessment tests will not affect a student’s eligibility to attend. Instead, they serve to evaluate his or her academic history and knowledge and place the student in the correct classes.

Financial Aid

Because of New York state laws and government laws, students cannot receive information about available scholarships and student financial aid until after they are accepted. Students are encouraged to apply liberally to the schools of their choice and, after acceptance, talk to the financial aid staff to determine the options available.

Financial aid is easy to secure at Jefferson Community College. Because it is an accredited institution, students can receive federal loans and grants as well as private loans and private scholarships. The staff is willing to help students receive the financial assistance necessary for attendance at the school. It is the school’s mission to provide an affordable two-year education to as many students as possible.

Students who are seeking government-funded financial aid must fill out the FAFSA form online. This form can be accessed through the school’s website, or it can be filled out in the financial aid office.
