Education comes in many different forms. Some institutions are focused on providing specific career training, while others offer a broader perspective of the arts and humanities. Through the BOCES program in the state of New York, degrees are not obtained in the same way that a regular community college would function. BOCES, or boards of cooperative educational services, provide various programs not to a specific institution, but to entire districts and different schools around the state or county.

Western Suffolk BOCES provides a variety of different educational programs to a variety of schools in Western Suffolk county, meaning that it is less a centralized school and more of a program of study that students can opt for on various campuses in New York state. With over 70 programs geared to people of all ages, Western Suffolk BOCES provides far-reaching educational services that cover everything from vocational training to general education.

As part of Western Suffolk’s BOCES program, Wilson Tech provides career and technical skills for both high school students and adults who are looking for the information they need to succeed in the workplace. Whether it’s understanding office administration or learning a hands-on skill, like computer design and repair or hair cutting and coloring, Wilson Tech provides the training that students need, as part of the Western Suffolk BOCES program, to get students ready for the workforce as soon as possible.

Western Suffolk BOCES offers three certificate programs: Cosmetology and Beauty, Skilled Trades, and Health and Medical Services. Through each of the three programs, high-school students, college-age individuals, and adults are able to learn important skills needed to join the workforce or switch careers, as well as a foundation for further learning.

A number of other programs are organized by number, and are far-reaching in their range of subject matter. From administrative support to English as a second language services, Western Suffolk BOCES offers a dizzying variety of different programs designed to help both students and school systems alike.

Most Popular Fields of Study

Financial Aid

Many students who take part on Western Suffolk BOCES certificate programs receive some form of financial aid. To get the ball rolling, students are encouraged to speak with the BOCES financial aid office, where counselors can provide specific answers to questions, as well as guidance with completing forms like the FAFSA. Because some of the programs are certificate programs for specific vocations, state funding can be used by students to help pay the costs. Otherwise, various grants and even work-study is available. To understand the options for financial aid thoroughly, the best bet for students is to arrange a time to speak to a financial aid counselor. It is important to note that students must be post-high school to receive financial aid for most courses.
