LSCC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to grant associate degrees and certificates. The college also holds accreditations from other agencies such as National HVAC Excellence, American Welding Society (AWS), Continuing Automotive Service Education (CASE), Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN), and American Dental Association (ADA) through the Council on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

Lawson State Community College provides educational degrees and certificates through the following academic divisions: Business Technologies, Career Technical, Health Professions, and Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students can earn Applied Science Degrees in areas such as automotive technician, electronics – industrial, commercial art & illustration, graphics and printing. Long and Short Certificates are also provided in fields such as graphics and prepress, horticulture – ornamental, industrial maintenance technology, interior design, machine tool, masonry technology, and radio/ TV production.

Professional certificates can also be earned in areas such as practical nursing, dental assistant, nursing assistant, clinical lab science/ medical technician, environmental science, health service administration, journalism, and interior architecture. LSCC Birmingham Campus also provides continuing education to students through diverse programs such as its adult education program, job training workforce, vocational rehab service, and low income taxpayer clinic.

Admissions

Lawson State Community College, as authorized by the State Board of Education, has an open door policy. To be eligible for admission to LSCC, students must hold a diploma issued at a regionally and/or state accredited high school or a GED certificate issued by the state of Alabama or another state’s department of education. First-time students must take the English, reading, and mathematics placement test known as COMPASS. The institute also admits students who do not have a high school diploma or a GED into specific programs. However, the courses taken in the programs do not count as college credit toward an associate’s degree. The students admitted under these requirements are classified as non-degree eligible students.

Students seeking a transfer to Lawson State Community College must send their official transcripts from all previous institutes attended. International students are also encouraged to apply for admission. International applicants whose native language is not English must take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

Financial Aid

Lawson State Community College identifies the need of students who are unable to meet their college expenses due to financial problems. The institute provides a range of financial aid programs through different sources, such as the federal Pell grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal College Work-Study, Alabama Student Assistance Program, and Vocational Rehabilitation. Students

Student life at the LSCC Birmingham Campus is vibrant and active. There are several active organizations and clubs at the campus. Students can join an organization or create a new one. Some of the popular campus organizations are Association of Information Technology Professional, Alpha Theta Phi Library Society, Kappa Beta Delta International Honor Society, Student National Education Association, Inter-Club Council, Mu Beta Chi Phi, The Sophist Club, Alpha Sigma Mu, Human Services Club, Afro-American History Club, Student Nurses Association, Pep Squad, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Skills USA (VICA), AWS (American Welding Society), SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) and American Dental Assistants Association.

LSCC students are encouraged to partake in the annual activities designed to set the spiritual, cultural, moral, and academic attitude of the institute. The popular activities include Installation of SGA Officers Convocations, SGA Election, Annual Christmas Musical, Blue and Gold Week, Career Day, Afro-American History Month, Vocational Education Week, Blood Drive, Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, Health Fair, Homecoming, Graduate/Alumni Banquet, Art Exhibition, Honors Convocation, President’s Brunch, and Commencement.

LSCC Birmingham Campus has an academic advising center to support students in their pursuit of meaningful educational programs. The counseling division staff provides professional guidance and counseling services to the students. The program is dedicated to the founding of an environment where a learner is provided the opportunity to become a self-directed, responsible, and to exploit his/ her potential for growth. The career placement center provides career-related services to students to help them find their right place in the workforce.

Unlike most community colleges, LSCC offers housing facilities for its students. The residence halls are equipped with the most up-to-date equipments for the convenience of the students. These rooms are furnished with free internet service, free satellite service, private bathrooms, controlled air & heat, and free local telephone connections. The dormitory is structured with three lounge/study halls that comprises of LCD flat-screen TVs with VCR-DVD capabilities and computers.

Athletics

Lawson State Community College’s athletic department sponsors men’s and women’s sports teams that participate in sports such as volleyball, basketball and baseball. The athletics are nicknamed as the Cougars. The college also provides quality intercollegiate and intramural programs to foster the personal growth of students. These programs support individual and team accomplishment and strive to augment the academic success, social development, and physical well being of the students.

Additional School Information

Lawson State Community College is licensed by American College Testing (ACT) as an ACT WorkKeys Employment Center. The center is an all-inclusive system for communicating, measuring, and improving the skills required for success in the workplace. It allows these skills to be quantitatively assessed for both individuals and in actual jobs.
