Rensselaer at Hartford, founded in 1955, is a private, coeducational institution. The campus is located in an urban area in Hartford. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 743.
The Lally School of Management and Technology was founded in 1955 and is located on the main campus. Courses also are offered at the Groton-New London branch (MBA, MSM). The basic educational approach is to prepare men and women for management careers in all industrial, commercial, nonprofit, and public sector organizations by providing broad understanding rather than narrow specialization. It also stresses development of decision-making skills and an analytical approach to management problems.

The Lally School of Management and Technology offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science in Management (MSM). Other programs include cross-registration with Trinity College, University of Hartford, St. Joseph College, and Hartford Seminary. The strongest areas of study are finance, innovation, entrepreneurship, and management information systems. The most popular courses are Accounting, Financial Management, and Creating and Managing an Enterprise.
Sixty total credits are required to complete the MBA (30 for the MS), including 21 elective credits (3 for the MS). Required courses include:

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements by taking up to 12 credit hours of course work at another institution, by transferring up to 6 credit hours, or by validation examinations.
Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The maximum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full or part time is 5 years for the MBA and 3 years for the MS.
There are 14 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 75% hold a doctorate; there are 8 part-time faculty, of whom 13% hold a doctorate. Average number of credit hours faculty teach is 9; average business class size is 20.

Library
The Robert L. and Sara Marcy Cole Library houses a collection of more than 30,000 volumes, and subscribes to 535 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in business and management publications of professional groups. Students have access to such databases and networks as CD-ROM and the Online Search Service. Other opportunities for research consist of a shared automated circulation system comprising 38 college and public libraries in greater Hartford. The library may also borrow from the OCLC international bibliographic system, with more than 5000 member institutions.
Computers
Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The school’s computer facility has a DEC VAX 11/750, a Sun 350, and 352 PCs available to students. PC work areas are equipped with AT&T, IBM, and Mac computers. The facility also has 30 NEC multispeed laptop computers.
Career and Job Placement
Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, but a resume clearinghouse is available to alumni.
International Students
International students must take the TOEFL. International students must score 600 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT) or 100 on the Internet-Based (iBT) version. They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health, and proof of adequate funds to cover 2 years of study.
Calendar
The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 14 weeks long; summer sessions, 14 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only and weekends.

A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0. Most important admissions factors are quality of undergraduate school, academic accomplishments and ability, and grades in upper-level courses. A strong mathematics background is not required.
The number of applicants for the 2006-2007 class was 320; 262 were accepted; 213 enrolled. The average GPA was 3.09. Transfers are accepted.
Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $75, and 2 letters of recommendation. The application deadline is open for fall entry. Students are notified on a rolling basis of the admissions decision. Once accepted, students may defer admission for 1 calendar year.

The FAFSA, the school’s own financial statement, and the previous year’s tax return are required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.
Tuition for all students is $1090 per credit. Graduate student housing is not available.

Eleven percent of the current graduate business school class are enrolled full time; 98% have had an average of 1 to 10 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from Connecticut (95%). Thirty-four percent are women, 27% are minorities, and 2% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 31; ages range from 22 to 60. Thirty percent already have a graduate degree. In 2006, 186 graduate business degrees were awarded.
