University of Dubuque, MBA Program Office History
University of Dubuque, founded in 1852, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The 56-acre campus is located in a small town 175 miles northwest of Chicago. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is approximately 1100. Enrollment and room and board figures in the above capsule are approximate.
The MBA Program Office was founded in 1983 and is located on the main campus. Courses also are offered in Hong Kong. The basic educational approach is a general management approach, balancing the theoretical, applied, quantitative, and qualitative methods.
University of Dubuque, MBA Program Office Academics
The MBA program offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) as well as a joint degree in divinity (MBA/MDiv). Other programs include work-study programs and internships.
Thirty-six total credits are required to complete the MBA. Required courses include:

Students may eliminate or substitute requirements by previous course work.
Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 1 year; maximum, 2 years. For students attending part time, the maximum is 8 years.
There are 6 total full-time graduate business faculty, of whom 33% hold a doctorate; there are 17 part-time faculty, of whom 41% hold a doctorate. Average number of credit hours faculty teach is 24; average business class size is 16.

Library
The university’s main library houses a collection of more than 150,000 volumes, 13,000 microform items, and 500 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 810 periodicals. Students have access to databases and networks in the fields of business and allied subject areas.
Computers
Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The business school has its own computer facilities, consisting of PCs in the Business Computer Center.
Career and Job Placement
Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time, and are available through the university placement office.
International Students
International students must take the TOEFL. International students must score 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT). They also must submit a translation of their transcripts, proof of health, and proof of adequate funds.
Calendar
The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 4 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the evening only.
University of Dubuque, MBA Program Office Admissions
A bachelor’s degree is required. The formula for using the GPA and GMAT scores is (200 x last 60 hours, GPA) + GMAT, or minimum 1000. Most important admissions factors are academic accomplishments and ability, grades in upper-level courses, and GMAT results. A strong mathematics background is required.
Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited via the overseas program.
Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, a nonrefundable application fee of $25, and 2 letters of recommendation. A personal interview is highly recommended. Check with the school for current application deadlines. Once accepted, students may defer admission for up to 1 year.

Tuition for all students is $450 per credit. On-campus room and board costs approximately $6200. Graduate student housing consists of on-campus accommodations, but most graduate students live off campus. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.
University of Dubuque, MBA Program Office Students
Fifty-two percent of a recent graduate business school class were enrolled full time; 85% have had an average of 5 to 10 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from Iowa (55%). Thirty-eight percent are women, 35% are minorities, and 35% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 31; ages range from 22 to 58. Six percent enter directly from undergraduate school; 5% already have a graduate degree. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 41%, business; 14%, math and science; 8%, engineering; 6%, social sciences; 5%, economics; and 2%, liberal arts. About 10% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons; 90% remain to receive their degree.
